For a first one, that's a nice one I'm bad at the middle grades, but will say med/lg letter VF20. Might be an N-14 with the die cracks on the ob and rev.

Great coin fourmack. This is definitely an example of an N-1 die variety which has a rarity rating of R.1 (very common). The die cracks on the obverse and reverse are diagnostic. I would give this coin a market grade of VF-30. As far as an EAC grade (Early American Copper uses a different grading scale) I would say EAC 20 to 25 with no major net deductions. My EAC attribution for this coin would be: 1837 N-1 R.1 25/20.

Here is the NGC web site Coronet Cent variety page: http://www.ngccoin.com/coin-varieti...ts-vscid-48/Also there is this online book which is the original authority on copper cents from 1816-1857. http://babel.hathitrust.org/cgi/pt?...ew=1up;seq=5This book is by Howard R. Newcomb who is the foremost authority on later date large cents. Unfortunately this work was produced in 1945 so it's a little out of date. By the way, $8 is a fantastic price for this coin. This coin should have been in the $40 range.

edweather has brought it to my attention that I was wrong in my attribution. This coin is actually an N-14 which has the same obverse die as the N-1 but has a different reverse. Reverse die "I" state b. This variety is rarer than the N-1 with a rarity rating of R.3. Good eye Ed. Here is a link for comparison. http://www.ngccoin.com/coin-varieti...1c-n-14-735/

I like VF-30 for this beauty. (The spot of verdigris should be addressed so it doesn't damage the coin further).
