Hello, this is the 1830 N-5 that just hit my P.O. Box this morning. I'd like grade and opinions on my latest acquisition. Thank You.

I literally lost my breath when I saw the surhaces of your coin. She is amazing! Don't ever let her go! I am inexperienced with these and say EF-40 EF-45?

she is a beauty. VF25 to 30 would be my guess.

thedollarman is going to make me look bad The hair just doesn't have enough detail for me to go that high, but the eye appeal is awesome. Looks good enough (chocolate) to eat. VF30, hopefully I'm wrong.

I am not good with these or for the most part any American coins. I was just going off an educated guess from the crisp leaves, nice surfaces, sharp undamaged devices, full eye, full curl in front of ear and the full braids in front of the buns as well as the fact that from what I can tell the obverse is a somewhat high relief and probably not fully struck as well as from my understanding that some points in US grading are for she appeal.....am I even close? Lol. Any way its a nice coin(emphasis on nice).

I've got this coin pegged at EAC 30. I've seen the same coin in worse condition in an EF-40 NGC slab. I'm not saying that this coin is a 40, not by my standards. Easy VF-30 IMO.

My first thought was VF35. Nice coin!

If its EAC30 and N-5 you are looking at a coin just outside of the condition census and Noyes Penny Prices 3rd edition prices it at $600. Other than that nasty rub to raw copper on the reverse rim at 6 o'clock, I'd say your coin is choice++ . If you have an old yellow 2x2 envelope maybe you can sit that one in there and see if that copper will retone a bit.

Personally, I think that the Heritage coin is superior to your example. The Heritage coin has color that might indicate some mint luster remaining, whereas yours is dark chocolate. Of course that is my own opinion and I do believe they would both grade the same and I can see your coin easily reaching in excess of $300 in front of the right people. You got a GREAT GREAT deal for $84.

I love this coin. Nice color. A little off struck and weak which accounts for what looks like wear on the hair and tops of the leaves. The hair around the ear has good detail as well as the lower locks. The hair bands are well seperated. The cheek shows minor wear. The only negative is the rim hit at 6oclock on the reverse. I think its definetly VF35. Nice pickup!

Thanks for your assessment EFLargeCents your opinion is valued. I don't care what it would go for because now it's not going anywhere!

I am going with at least VF30, possibly VF35. Slightly weak strike on obverse, nice uniform colour and surfaces. A very nice coin and congratulations, celticsoul!

I have noticed a few 1830 LCs already with what appears to be an inner ring around the beading on the obverse. Your example shows this (partially)as well. Is this typical of 1830 large cents? or just this particular variety.

The inner ring you ask about is called "inner circle" and is a circumferential scribe-mark either under or just off the tips of the dentils. Some dies have a complete "inner circle", some have partial or remnants of an "inner circle" and some have none. It can be seen on many different LC varieties and years.
