Are there any obvious red flags. This was purchased from a Christiansen Auction many years ago. The diameter is 40 m.m. and it weighs 26.8 grams. Portions of the under coin are visible with a glass, but not enough to tell the type or date. The edge is mostly plain except for a small area that shows the circle and squares of an 8 Reales.

Not within my (limited) areas of expertise, but I'd opine that the details you mention (traces of the original coin) would require the talents of a master forger.

I have a same coin but I can't see any remnant left from the host coin. My coin is 27.00 grams and 41-0-41.2 mm. Your coin looks very nice so no red flag to me.

Nice coin - certainly has the look of a genuine item.

The idea of leaving a trace of the under-type visible was intentional. Mathew Boulton came up with the idea that by adjusting the striking pressure he could leave a trace of the host coin to deter forgers. It really did not work because within a few weeks a forger had made dies which included a partial 8R design. As far as counterfeits go the ones with the 8R traces are fairly scarce and bring a premium from counterfeit collectors like myself.
