What are people's thoughts on breaking open prestige sets for the commemorative coin and selling the rest and ogp. Prestige sets are so cheap now, they pretty much just cost the value of the commemorative until you get toward the end of the prestige series.

I have broken up mint sets and proof sets, but I don't think I could break a prestige set..

Same here, I have broken up many....many proof and mint sets, but I don't think that I would ever crack a Prestige set. With the Prestige sets, the Premier Silver proof sets, the American Legacy proof sets and most of the Coin and Chronicle sets, the packaging, whether you like it or not, is just as important to the set as the coins are.
Just go check out the "Post pictures of U.S. OGP sets" thread.

When you own a set you can do whatever you want with it. I doubt you would find much value for the packaging. The packaging can be easily opened and resealed.

As an avid fisherman, I think I've opened up just as many mint and proof sets as fish I've caught! Although, I yet to open one Prestige Set. However, it's yours, so you can do with it as you please.

Quote: breaking open prestige sets for the commemorative coin and selling the rest and ogp. I break a lot of sets .. hundreds. In my opinion trying to sell the common proof coins and the OGP .. would not be easy and make any profit. I have seen coin shops just dump the coins they don't use to the bank. Also I feel the early prestige sets have commemorative coins that are very common and do not cost much to purchase on their own. Prestige sets may not have very much value now ... but they may in the future. I think as a group they can be a good part of your collection

I hope to acquire more in the future. Quote: I think as a group they can be a good part of your collection Love those two photos!

If you want the Commemorative just buy it, it would probably be less than the Prestige Set, and you don't have the headache of trying to get rid of the extra coins. And the last two Prestige sets I believe are considerably more than the commems are worth.

Yeah. But the early prestige sets can sell for as little as 20 bux. That's cheaper or the same price as the commemorative silver dollar on their own. I'm torn. It probably would be a pain to sell the ogp and common proofs. Hmm

I always go back and forth on this one. On the one hand, I don't care for breaking coins out of sets, but on the other hand, doing so makes those that are still in OGP (incrementally) more valuable. Do what you like.

I cannot believe I am saying this... If you can get the set for less than the single commemorative dollar, then get the set, pull the dollar, and spend the rest. (I would rather you not do that though.)
