OK, was this done with a Grease Filled Die?

7070, yup, grease. As an aside, that coin is one that is counterfeited regularly. On the screen, that "S" is suspect to me. Have you looked at it and compared to Coppercoins website? If I get a chance when I get home, I will check it out.

That S does not look right to me either. On a genuine 1909 S VDB cent, there has to be a notch in the upper serif and the die chip in the upper loop. I dont see either. It screams FAKE.

Sorry to be realistic but the coin looks like it is not genuine as those diagnostics are on every example.

Found in rolls and Jim1953

I brought out the big guns and took better close ups
Compare the coin with the illustrations I found.
What do you think.
It looks to me that it is obverse #4
The serifs are vertical
I can see a notch in the uppper part of the letter S.

I'm still not convinced. Look at your coin and imagine a line straight down the very right side of the upper serif. It would cut into the lower loop of the S. On the genuine piece, it would run along the right side of the lower loop of the S.

Also, the upper right edge portion of the serif is slanted on your piece and should be straight as seen in the picture.

Also , look at how thick the lower part of the S is where it meets the serif on your coin, versus how thin and narrow that part of the S is on the genuine example.

One last point for now. The S on your piece does not seem to be worn consistent with the wear on the coin. It's too solid for the condition.

It is one that I would definitely have authenticated if I paid good money for it. It troubles me. It could be the wear but I would be a little careful with this one.

A close up of the V.D.B. might help also. The ones faked to be the 1909-S V.D.B. use the 1909 V.D.B. and there are differences there also. I can't tell from your image. It appears worn in that area also.

7070,, I can see what you are suggesting about die #4. Still, this coin bothers me and after "Founds" last post I know why. His comment about the wear on the MM is dead on. The rim next to the date is worn to the field, the 2nd nine is flat and the right side of the zero is worn down to the field also. There is strong wear on the lapel of the coat to the left of the MM, too. Yet, the MM is very strong with it's best side to the right were the most wear is at. I just do not understand how the wear missed the MM. It may be just fine, but if it were mine, it would be gone to PCGS in a New York minute. Sure not trying to be a wet blanket, it just does not look right to me.

Sure hope I am wrong, Jim
