I buy a lot of ebay coins, but there is nothing better than hitting the coin shows a few times a year.

The local shops are alright, but plagued with rude or indifferent staff.

We sell over 70 per cent export and MOST of our better Canadian Coins end up in the USA . Simply put MOST Canadian collectors (not all) do not pay big money for coins. A bigger reason than dollar exchange is the TAX factor. We are GST HST registered and must collect and remit.

Funny you say that pacific, I was recently having a conversation with someone about that fact around 70% of the stuff I sell here in the states ends up as export, with a good amount of it going to Canada... The tax factor may be the reason for that... I do completely agree on some of the best material staying in the U.S., when I end up better Canadian it usually does not leave the country...

@jdmern the tax issue is huge. Some provinces it is an additional 15 per cent over and above. Most of the better collections of any country are in your country for very good reason. Americans generally are more affluent and over time have had the purchasing power to buy better coins. In the US there is an actual numismatic industry.
Canada by comparison is not even on the radar when it comes to numismatics .In Canada when we have a coin show with 40 to 50 tables it is a major event. In the US that is a tiny blip on the radar. In a 3 month time period I am within driving distance of 6 US shows easily that size or bigger..Living in Canada is great and I would never leave for any where else but if I want to continue to make a living doing what I love ( numismatics) I know where my bread is buttered........the good old USA.
Another thing that needs to be mentioned is how incredibly different the collecting habits are between the two countries.I will just say this not too many collectors in CANADA HAVE EVER SPENT even a hundred dollars on a single Numismatic coin.

If you live remote from a coin show or dealer, buying or selling on line is really the only practical way to go.
