Is this mint error really worth a $6975 premium?

RedBook lists a "Silver $" off center as being worth around $2000. I don't know what the going rate is but with the coin being PCGS AND AU55 it's possible it could be worth several thousand. I have never understood people setting a price so high but whatever floats their boat

Bryan ... a 21-D in AU without the mint error would go for about $25. I will admit this is dramatic error for a coin of that size, but c'mon $7K?

I'm no expert but I can't see it being worth that much. I certainly have been surprised in the past but that just seems like it's too much. Again, just my humble opinion.

well, seeing the make offer button. They make the buy price incredibly high in hopes someone offers half that or some other ridiculously high amount and they take that. I've done "tests" like this and trust me, there are buyers that are willing to offer you a ridiculously high amount that is under the buy it now price and the amount offered is much higher than what the "coin" or error is worth.

First off I agree with the price
being way off but had a question
about the coin itself. looking at the obv. pic
of it (or rev.) (I'm sure pcgs knows what they are doing)
but it seems like if you slide the the whole normal
area of the strike up and over, and centered it
on the planchet, there would still be more of
the planchet visible. (around the edge) is it normal for a strike like
this to stretch out the planchet dia. that much ?

Maybe, to somebody. Not me.

I could see 1000-1500 I suppose because you don't see these every day. If it were from 1878-1904 I might think $2000 would be a floor. But $7000? That gets:

Bonham3 ...yes. an off-center struck coin is struck without the retaining collar in place. The strike, especially on dollars is at such a high pressure that the planchet is flattened a little and spreads.

Also, the price is way out of line but someone might go that high. I doubt it though.

Thanks,
Bill

They must be looking for the buyer of this '21-D at PCGS 58 for $8050 from Heritage.
