Look at the date, nice example of Mechanical Doubling. Now check the W & E of the motto. Sure looks like a double die. I believe this is a case of neither, just a loose die that rotated somewhat during the coining process. Any thoughts ?

Morgan, by my lights it still looks like Mechanical Doubling with classic flat impression. There is some phase shift, but I don't think that is necessarily unusual.

I think there is confusion as to the term Mechanical Doubling. Simply put, anything that gives the impression of doubling that is not caused by a doubled die can be referred to as Mechanical Doubling.

A slight die hop, shift, twist, and so on would result in " Mechanical Doubling" all without value.

There are other forms of doubling that are without value such as Die Deterioration Doubling that are named according to the cause of the doubling. Still no value.

This dime shows typical Mechanical Doubling on the letters and the date.

Thanks guys, Until that dime all I've seen is Mechanical Doubling left or right, or up and down.

I agree with foundinrolls 100%. Anything that's doubled but is not hub doubled is Machine Doubling. "mechanical" doubling is not proper terminology.
