I brought these two FBL Franklins tonight and I believe I got a pretty good deal. I been pricing the 1949 D MS65 FBL for a while. Any thoughts?

Hi Farstaff,

Sorry. IMHO I feel that the second half dollar is badly damaged and wouldn't be worth more than bullion price. The coins reverse goes beyond toning and has progressed into surface damage. If possible, I would return the coin ASAP..

I would have to agree with Catman on the second coin. Don't know how that coin was stored or cared for but do know if you resubmitted it you probably wouldn't come near the same grade or FBL designation. Quite honestly I wouldn't want that coin in my collection due to the visible damage. Could this just be a real bad scan of the coin?

Wow !, The first one has a really nice obverse. Has a few hits on the reverse about 1/2 way up. looks ok.
The second one. I really do hope that is a bad scan. the obverse looks damaged and the reverse looks like it was exposed to something or damaged.I am certainly not one to criticize but I would see if they have a refund policy on the second. $395.00 is a lot to loose or spend on hopes of an "investment" coin.
I hope it works out well for you.

I had an auction I won a few years back and asked some friends their opinion. they said to politley email the seller explain your concern. and very nicely ask if they would consider just cancelling the sale, leave NO feedback and YOU pay their selling /listing fees. the seller was very nice and agreed.

good luck

I noticed in the seller's return policy he offers a 7 day return on raw coins and no returns on certified coins. However, he does have excellent feedback and would probably give a refund if pressed. I'm not so sure the coin is pitted on the reverse as it seems from the scan. It does kinda look that way, but it might just be breaks in the heavy toning. But, the toning is extremely heavy and maybe is something to be wary of, since technically, all toning is damage to the surface, some of it is just more attractive to look at! The seller's other coins seem to be of high quality, I think he would give a refund if there is a legitimate problem.
Rest in Peace

The reverse on the 49-d looks almost like shellac. Perhaps it was stored in an album with acidic paper before it was encapsulated. At any rate it is damaged. I would take the others advice and return them both as I don't feel either one merits the grade assigned. It is good advice to stay with a top rated TPG service. You can usually get some good advice here, prior to buying, if you want in the future. Mike

I don't have the coins in my hand as of yet. But will shortly. I believe the scan of the coin makes it look worse than it is. More than likely it is end of roll toning.

Mike, correct me if I am wrong, but is not "ICG" one of the four top rated TPG service?

Thanks

Hi, end of roll toning is a good possibility in light of the clean edge. ICG is known to overgrade Moderns. I think they are trying to lose that reputation however. See if they back their grading on a re-submittal. They have been around a while, maybe the damage worsened after it was slabbed. I only own one ICG slabbed coin, and it is a colonial. The main issue is that you are happy with the coins! Mike
