What do you think the grade is? This coin was just sent off to ANACS this morning. I'll post the actual grade when I get it back.

Notwitstanding we have members selling coins worth millions nobody seems brave enough to answer this question

I received a private mail asking please to add my thoughts

Caveats ; I am only calibrated in 20 dollars between MS 60 and MS 66
Caveat 2 : on french coins I use the european system with a very clear cut off between a coin I would want to own and one I would not want to own ( high XF only )
Caveat 3 my pain medication for my ribs after the caraccident makes me a little less inhibited then I usually am

There we go ; after manipulating the pics for 15 minutes I said
brushed and lowest XF at best
The coin being outside my buy range of intrest I consulted my mentor and teacher
He said I was wrong on the brushing since there is no polarisation and no circular shine and that the lines running 6 to 12 o'clock were due to god knows what but not brushing
He also said that the wear at at earside was too severe to be XF
Overall he said VF
In view of our mutual experiences with third party graders I personally expect you will make XF minimum grade

Ageka, I can't tell you how much I'm learning about grading gold coins from you. While I'm very comfortable with my skills as far as silver, copper, and others go, I am still tending to overgrade gold. What you say makes sense. I thought the wear around the ear looked a little severe. I am surprised that the hairlines are not showing more wear, though.

It's good to have a resident Gold Coin Expert on staff!!
Rest in Peace

ageka, thank you for looking this one over. I am curious about the vertical lines as well. I will be pleased with an an EF grade. Please extend my thanks to your freind who offered assistance as well. Your input is very much appreciated and respected. Wishing you a speedy recovery. Mike

You have to realise that for the last three years I bought all coins on photograding without seeing them and was only disappointed a few times because the seller was so dishonnest to show the picture of a different coin
My friend has been buying coins on photograding and having them slabbed and most came back one grade above our mutual consensus
So we seem consistently to undergrade by one level

The coin came back from ANACS this morning. AU Details - Cleaned.

The area above the ear that appears to be so worn also appears to be a lot higher than the rest of the coin. I'm wondering it there was a minting error that deposited too much metal in that area.

I am sorry to say that we cannot agree we the grade
The cleaning cannot be proven and the classification is too high
NCG would probably classify it as uncleaned and XF
I did not look up prices but that is our judgement

As photo graders we are well aware of the high points of any gold coins
The difference between VF and XF is very technical but to call it AU just confirms the problems between third party slabbers
And why do they claim it was cleaned if there is no polarisation ?
We use only NCG and never ever had these kind of unexplainable things
