I was at the bank yesterday and asked for any dollar coins or half dollar coins as I normally do. They had a quite a number of gold dollars, which I took to try to upgrade or fill holes in my Presidential/Sac/Native American albums.

While going through them I came across this little bit of fun:
Gold-SBA

I think she looks better in gold, honestly.

Yes, that almost became the new U.S. $1 coin: The 24 karat gold-plated SBA dollar, but the gold plating messed with the electromagnetic signature in vending machines, so the idea was scrapped.

Valued at not one cent more than face value.
Not to worry; a curio keeper anyway.

I guess most of us who have been collecting for decades, end up with at least one or two plated coins.

Went through the rest of the pile and found 3 hole upgrades/fillers, including one NIFC Wilson. Not a bad day.

I had a coin dealer once give me a highly gold plated 1999 dime once. It's funny though, I don't think I've ever really found any gold plated cents or nickels, or anything CRHing. I've found some colored ones, but nothing with true gold plate, or maybe I've found ones with LIGHT gold plating.

In the end, I once found a chrome plated 1989 cent. Once in a lifetime find...maybe.

This SBA is easily the best example of a plated coin I've ever come across. She's not going anywhere except into a 2x2.

After which time I will happily regale all my friends with the story of how I encountered her... at a bank.
