I was wondering what you think the chances are of the San Francisco mint making coins for circulation again. I sure miss putting the S coins in my folders.

Even if they did or had to for a period of time I bet there's a possibility of us losing all 3 MM's for a period of time as they would try to prevent hoarding of the S mintmark coins again...

Technically, they are making the UNC S mint Washington quarters, not exactly intended for circulation but large amounts are out there circulating.

CHD is correct. Since 2012 there have been business-strike S-mint ATB Quarters produced, but only sold through the US Mint to collectors.

The coins are technically NIFC but are produced in the millions (I think?), so they are out there.

It really throws a wrench into the works of us collectors that like albums (since there is no hole for these accursed things!).

I think the old San Francisco mint building is simply too small to become a modern coin mass production facility, especially if they are forbidden from changing the facade of the building itself for heritage reasons. To see S-mintmark coins again, they'd have to build a new, larger, modern mint somewhere in the Bay area. But such a mint might not technically be in San Francisco anymore, so whether they'd use "S" or some other letter would be up for debate.

The new S mint was opened in 1937 and shut down from 1956-1968 for renovations. That would technically make it the newest mint aside from West Point. I know that they made cents, nickels, and some SBA dollars until the 1970s/80s, and used unmarked dies to provide supplemental coinage during the 80s/90s. Was the new San Francisco mint ever intended to supply primary circulation issues, or was it intended for proofs only when renovations began in the 50s?

I would not count on it ever happening. I think the mint is making the most of that facility now.
