Picked this up today from my local coin shop. I am a new collector, and have a grade in my mind for this coin, but wanted to get opinions first.
Obverse:

This is also my first picture post attempt. I used my scanner at 600x600dpi.

Hmmm. Just the barest beginnings of wear (or strike weakness - these aren't my strong point) at the highest points. I'm thinking AU, 55 at a bare minimum and maybe 58.

Hi Jim,

I'll go along with an AU-55 grade. There is slight greyish discoloration on Liberty's breast. This is always the first place I look when trying to decide whether a Walker is uncirculated. With this slight but definite rub, this coin can't make mint state. It is still a great coin for starting up a collection!

It may just be the scanner, but luster doesn't look very strong. If the coin actually has good luster in-hand it could go AU-58.

The luster of the coin is definitely much better than those pictures entail. I am not sure why my scanner shows the coin to be so grey... I tried taking a pic with my camera, but it was out of focus.

MS-63 maybe MS-64 if the marks are very light.

jbakic,

I'm having the same issues getting the color/contrast correct on my photos. With mint luster (I'll take your word for it) I would say this is MS-62. The obverse strike appears weak, keeping me from going higher. The reverse would probably be MS-63. I look for feather definition on the eagles thigh and it has decent definition. The flat breast appearance on the obverse is most likely due to the weak strike.

If the breast has a luster break, I would say 58 if not 63. The 39P is one of the better struck Walkers in the series and always makes a perfect type coin.
