Mint records report a total mintage of 348000 large cents bearing the date 1806. Only one die variety is known for the year, S-270. Breen describes that the obverse die had already been used to coin ca. 50000 cents dated 1805. This implies the amount coined with the single obverse die amounted in total to ca. 400000 specimens. Breen estimates this is an unreasonably high number for the time. So, in his estimation the 1806 date mintage is incorrect (and some of the mintage was actually dated 1805, 1804 or even 1803), or, the die paring must have been of extraordinary quality. We will probably never know the actual mintage dated 1806. Here my example of the date. How would you grade her? Thank you!

I love the info you gave and the coin, the reverse carries it to F-12 for me.
Feel free to call me Will.

I'll grade it at EAC 12. It's got considerable but even wear. The reverse looks great. S-270s are known for weak and uneven strikes and this one looks solid. I have an S-270 myself but it doesn't quite look this good.

F12 Also. Some light porosity but this is pretty normal for this series

LOL, looks like the CCF regulars are all on the same track, I really looked at this coin before scrolling down and I too had it pegged at EAC F12. No big surprise there I guess, lots of EAC and expert graders here! A super nice coin as usual GERMANICVS!

Thank you all for your opinions.
This forum probably has the greatest concentration of true copper lovers and knowledgeable early copper people that I have seen. You are absolutely right there, west coin, and another reason to congregate here!
Breen writes that 1806 LC's, due to being a 1-variety only year, has a reputation for alleged rarity. This in reality only applies to mint state examples. At any rate, I got this example of Ebay-US and had to pay for it. It does have nice surfaces and no corrosion.
jimbucks- no scratch across cheek but could be a hairline - will look a bit closer.
