I'm not a coin collector, buyer, or seller but I am somewhat internet literate. A friend of mine asked if I could find out some identification or information on a coin he has. The coin says Population 2,500,00 Ohio 10,000 Square Miles 1802 around the outside edge on one side with several sheaves of wheat in the middle and a date of 1855. The only thing I can recognize on the other side is the days of the week around the outside rim. Can anyone help me with the identification of this coin? Its not in very good shape as you can see from the photos. Its about an inch and a half in diameter and metal.

rwgreene,

I can't help you much with this piece. Ohio became a state in 1803. This could be a commemorative medal of some sort that represents an event that led to Ohio's Statehood.

I would look at the historical events, organizations ect. that led to Ohio becoming the 17th state. A clue may be found there.

I had originally thought it might be a commemorative coin also. I contacted the Ohio Historical Society about a week and a half ago and they have not gotten back to me. I'm now leaning toward it being an autual coin only because of the ridges on the edge and the 1855 date. Thx for the reply.

Contacted https://www.ogs.org about two weeks ago as suggested. No reply. Also no reply from the Ohio Historical Society....guess these people aren't as helpful as I originally hoped! Typical!

It's a commemorative, not a regular issue (the ridges [reeding] aren't necessarily indicative of circulation coins) , but it could be (and likely is) a very old commemorative. The population of Ohio reached two million about 1855 and it would have been appropriate to issue a token at the time. I suspect it might have its most value to a local (Ohio) token or commemorative collector, but it's value would be difficult to ascertain unless the numbers minted, the demand, and previous sales for such a token are known.

It would be nice to see an image of the reverse side.

I wish someone would identify this. I keep coming back to it to look at it.
