I went into the coin shop to look for a book on Roman coins (which was kind of spur of the moment, since I was actually after a history book!) Bad idea going to the book shop via the coin shop.

Anyhow I got myself a book on Roman coins, and then I had a look at some Roman coins and I even bought one. Then I just cast my eye down to the bottom row of the counter and what's sat there? An 1804 Half Cent, priced at c.$26.

Well I saw it, I liked it and I bought it...

That's another purchase on eye appeal.

Nice Half Cent. There is something that is so cool about a 200+ year old coin. Show us the Roman too if you can

I think it's a plain 4 actually, matters little though, I just like the piece! It was one of those coins, I had no idea of the price, frankly I didn't care, I saw it and I knew it was coming home with me. Looking in the book though I think I did well.

Probably overpaid a fair bit on the Roman though, but that was another coin I just liked;

Antoninus Pius 138-161 Denarius. I think it's Annona on the reverse. (One of the four Good Emperors)

What a great find! I messed with the pics in my editor and I think it has stems. It's hard to tell, but either way you got it for a good price. I just love those old coppers!

The older coppers (U.S.) are tough to find here and most were used extensively so your coin is for the most part what we are accustomed to seeing for sale here in the U.S.! If you get into higher grades you must have a very deep wallet. Most of my old coppers look just like yours! Many a hand has held them through the years as those coppers were the work horses of the times. Not to mention you could actually BUY some thing with those coins back then.

Terry you're right. They got lots of wear. It seems because of it ones in XF and AU are hard to find at times. Copper is fun! There's nothing like seeing a big, giant, U.S. chocolate brown penny!

Generally Terry I'm a VF to EF fan. I tend not to go below VF and I very rarely go above EF. I like coins with light wear, firstly because they tend to tone more subtle, more grey than anything else (which is what I like), a bit of wear shows they've done their job and they've been through a few hands and thus have history. However I like to be able to appreciate the details too, so I tend to go for coins with light wear.

Having said that though I don't actually collect copper coins (that is I don't have any copper coin sets), but if I find one I like the look of, )and with coppers I like really worn coins as much as I like full lustre specimens), then basically i'll buy it.

I saw it, I liked it and I bought it.

But of course Terry as you do realise in Europe we're used dealing with EF coins from this period, like EF 1816 George III sixpences, they're practically ten a penny in comparison.

I find the biggest turn off with US coins for me is the prices you have to pay for higher grade circs. I generally like quality so I can appreciate the design and how the contemporaries percieved it when it was only a few years old.
