Please look at the last coin on this website. That Morgan looks terrible to me. Could someone explain how exactly it got a PCGS MS 66?

Thankyou,
-Ben

Ben, I am adding to this because I want to see what some of the Morgan collectors think. I am by no means good with Morgans, but this seems way out of line.

Ben,

Without being able to see it more closely I would have to guess that maybe there is a crack in the slab and it has been exposed to some dangerous gasses? It could have an extraordinarily strong strike. I can make out breast feathers even with all the bad toning. Curious...

Ben:
Perhaps they graded it 'after a liquid lunch'?

Toning does not affect a coin's grade. Under the tone, the coin is probably a technical 66.

Truth, that.

Prime candidate for a Crack-'n'Dip.

It does look good under the toning. All the high points appear to be in excellent condition. Would like to have a closer look.

I agree that the toning, although ugly doesn't effect the grade of the coin only the eye appeal. I also want to point out this is a NGC slab not PCGS as mentioned above but that bears little to none about the grade since both are reputable TPG's. Its the lack of hits and strength of the strike that makes the coin its technical grade and its the toning that makes it ugly, the toning can come off the hits can't and it may even make a MS-67 once the ugly is washed off (that is if you know what you are doing and don't ruin the coin when you dip it). I know I know what everyone is going to say, "You should never dip/clean a coin" but come on it can't do much but help that thing

Just to clarify, you meant it's an NGC MS-66?

I agree with others who said toning doesn't affect the grade, BUT, on 65+ I think it's the unspoken rule that eye appeal (does) come into play... even if they claim it doesn't. Also, original mint luster certainly would and I can't imagine much of it is visible through that dark, ugly toning.

The pictures are pretty lose res, but I sure as heck wouldn't pay for 66 based on that photo.

If it's dipped just the right way it will dramatically improve the eye appeal, and kill the market value at the same time. Just a sad fact of life.

I highly doubt that the coin looks anything like the image provided, there was no effort made at all to capture either color or luster. In fact, I don't have a clue what that 1921 looks like in hand, no matter how many times I look at the image.
Still, from looking at some of the other images from this auction, I'll bet it's just as much a dog as the rest of them seem to be.

As far as dipping goes........to me, dipping not only alters the coins surface, it removes any character or individuality that has occurred naturally over time. In other words, it becomes a widget.

Agreed. Does not look like it deserves that grading I've got a few that look better and have worse grading.

If the black Morgan has luster it's worth some big bucks. Some black Morgans came from the Binion Collection. They look black but when tilted into the light you will see different colors. A black Morgan with luster is rare.

Actually a 1921 with toning on it at all is pretty rare, this date didn't tone like other dates of the series did so its pretty hard to find nice 1921 toned coins like you can find in other dates
