Not sure if this should be under "Numismatic Supplies" Forum:

I'm looking for a good cheap safe, that can be bolted to the floor, to hold about a dozen Dansco-sized coin albums? Not sure how many cubic feet that is or what the minimum size should be. I don't want to spend alot of money. Any suggestions?

Local locksmith / safe store, ebay, Craigslist, Walmart and Dunham's ( or other sporting goods stores) carry small gun safes that would work.

Typically, the words Good & Cheap don't go together. You may want something that is fire rated also. Depending on where you live and how close the fire department is, look for something with at least 45 min - hr fire rating.

Yup to what collect4fun said. I would suggest taking an empty album with you to Walmart, as there is one close to everyone, and check and see the fit. My guess is that the 1.8 or 2 cubic ft safes would be large enough. I think Walmart carries the Sentry brand which I believe has a fire rating, can be bolted down, and is under $200.

Fire safe

If you do get a fire safe, get some silica gel as well to absorb the moisture. I have two that I "recharge" at the same time. I keep one sealed away and then pull it out when the first one get full of moisture. Using this method I haven't had any problems at all and the safe was easy to bolt to the floor. Good luck!

Coins and safes:

the Sentry types fire safes are designed to prevent PAPER from charring in a fire. The insulating material has a VERY high moisture content that is released in the event of a fire. This is BAD for coins. Also as you look at one of these, think, how hard would it be to break in to this. Answer 3 to 5 min with a large hammer. What tools are in your garage?

If you need to use this type of security container (It's not a safe) 1. put the albums in zip lock bags with something to absorb the moisture. and second HIDE it well. Bolt it down in the back of a closet and build a box around it with a fake heater vent.
Some thing to camouflage your investment.

With Safes, Bigger is better. You will always find something to put on them. Bigger, bolted down, harder for someone to walk out the door with it. Bigger is harder to do if you are renting, although I have moved 2 500 lbs safes to 3 different apts (upstairs units) until I got a house.

I would suggest that you talk to local locksmiths, ask for a used safe.

Places to look. Craigslist, local paper, (business supplies equipment) E-Bay Etc. If you are willing to haul it home and have a safe tech (not all locksmiths are safe techs) look at it before you use it. you can get a really good safe for cents on the dollar. I picked my last safe for $500 delivered. it was a TL-15 1000lb Jewelers safe (22 inches x 26 inches x 30 inches)
New it sold for $3200.00.
