This came off the "bargain board" - what I liked about it was that it's from the Guadalajara mint, which despite what the books say, I see many fewer examples of than from other mints, and its honest patina and toning (most are an unnaturally, at least as regards to circulated specimens, blazing white).

Nice looking original coin. Is there a method to your collecting these? Every date and mintmark and assayer (good luck LOL), maybe a date/assayer run from one mint? I am going for a nice collection by mints, and I am discovering it is not as easy as I thought it would be. Good luck and keep posting.

Well, they're not like Morgans where there's a selection in virtually every shop. So it's actually pretty random for me, picking up decent examples whenever they present themselves (so long as the price isn't too dear, of course). I've gotten to a point, though, where I'm trying to stay away (although I didn't in this case) from buying mediocre condition later ones made utilizing the standardized ("dragon's teeth") dies, unless they sport over- or re-stamps or bear interesting chopmarks.
