Is that part raised or incuse? I think I can still see the lettering carried over into the affected area, which isn't descriptive of a Cud, I'm thinking I that it's either a strike through or a Retained Cud.

It's a blanking burr, otherwise known as a "rolling fold". It's caused by a chipped or dulled blanking die. It leaves the blank with a vertical prong extending up from the face/edge junction. The prong is folded inward during upsetting and then struck into the coin.

Thanks for this info Mike. So the event happened before the strike and made the planchet taller in that area, thus when struck the devices were prevented from forming around that area. Makes sense now. I knew you would know what it was. I didn't see anything on your forum about this error? (unless I over looked it.)

Excellent! That's my first Blanking Burr. I understand now, why it's also referred to as a rolling fold. I really like this place. Thank you so much.

Now that I know that, I know I was also wrong about the vlds. I am glad to be wrong on this one, because next time I'll be right.

I was unsure, so I asked Mike for his help with this one. I knew he would have the answer.

What does VLDS mean? I'm new to that specific terminology.
