Rest in Peace

I have lots of coins.
Those very few coins that have real value are in my safety deposit box. The rest are scattered throughout the house.
My hope is that all three of our children will enjoy the coins in future years, and then hand them down to the grandkids.
So, we hope the coins stay in the family.
In summary we have lots of coins, very few of them worth a lot, and we hope our kids and grandkids enjoy them someday and keep them in the family.

Prethen, You and I seem to have something in common: Once we get our grimy claws,(Before we wash them) on any new items, they are "forever imprisioned in those little boxes, cases, safe, or where ever they might still find room to store 'em in! I'm about ready to invade the wifes closet. Mine doesn't have room for "my children" and all those clothes. The nice thing about our "children", we NEVER have to settle any arguements! Dick

The box is NEVER big enough.

I've said this many times in the past to many people. Vaults, safes, etc are a waste of money. Silicon gel packs too are a waste of money. I've been collecting for well over 60 years and no problems with toning, corroding, tarnishing, etc on any coin. I have all coins in Whitman Classic Albums or 2x2's. All Albums are in freezer type zip lock bags with as much air pushed out as possible. Over 100 of them. 8 boxes of 2 row 2x2's also in plastic bags. I live in a high humidity area. No problems in over 60 years but if there is a problem with those coins in the next hundred years I'll let you know.

It should be getting rather chilly in your part of the US right now.
Why don't you unload your box and drive it down to florida where I am
sell it to me, have a little holiday, go back to that frozen north and then get a bigger box?
No joke just an offer.

Sure, I suppose I could get a bigger safe deposit box or multiple of them. However, the situation in my mind is the same. I'm asking myself the question "What am I doing? What is it I want to collect? Or, should I just accumulate and hoard?" I realized that there are some items, albeit nice, that are not what I would consider to be part of my core collection/focus.
The "overflowing" box basically symbolizes a time for me to reevaluate. I've actually already sold a few items in the past month that I wouldn't have dreamed selling a few years ago. Actually, a fellow forum member (wanna out yourself?) was on the receiver end for one of those items. I'll consider any more such "moves" this spring.

What a great problem to have Prethen. I noticed that my goals of completing sets (or nearly so) and placing them in Dansco albums has really crowded my bank box. I am going to need a bigger one I think. Don't sell your collection, go for a bigger storage box!

1 large box and 1 reg box. Mostly keys semi keys and gold platinum coins. And my currency collection. I thought about a gun safe to put them in so I could keep them at my house. But I think its safer in the bank.

My girlfriend asks how many "safety deposit boxes" will you need by the time you're 60 ? (I'm 39 and she wants to get married in a year or so) Which by the way........ HOW DO I CONTINUE TO COLLECT COINS WHEN "MY" MONEY SUDDENLY BECOMES "OUR" MONEY........and taking food off of the plate of her now 3 year old daughter ? and future "college fund" and her "new car"............ sheeeesshhh ! ANY THOUGHTS ON THAT KIND OF SITUATION FELLAS ? ADVICE ? I don't feel right about a "secret bank account" Ha Ha

If your are lucky, your wife-to-be will have the same pocketbook fetish mine has. No argument from her when I want to buy something! Seriously, my wife appreciates my hobbies as I do hers. She is not that obsessed with Vera Bradley and Brighton bags. She has a healthy appreciation for Disney collectibles as well. Point is, I don't think you will have any real problems. Just remember to balance your wants with your new family's needs. Moderation in all things, as they say.

Eaglefoot: Do what my wife and I did...we get an "allowance" each week to do whatever we want to do with it for fun things. We don't miss the money since it is built into our budget. Just make sure it's not too large so it doesn't put any financial strain on your family. My wife saves hers for furniture and I buy coins, makes perfect sense to me and we are both happy!
