I know all prices are YMMV, but typically the "revised NGC" retail list prices now mirror PCGS on most coins. They used to be consistently lower on NGC - except for gold which PCGS has always reacted more/quicker to the spot price changing. But when NGC broke away from being the same as numismedia ( seems like it was about 2 years ago now ) the two biggies have been pretty well aligned for most coins I look up.

But I recently came across a couple that vary widely. Like $325 in PCGS and $660 in NGC. And $260 in PCGS and $515 in NGC. So one is double the other roughly. I wonder what is up with that?

I can understand being 10% different or even 20%, but double?

On the first example, I also see dealer prices vary widely as I just bought one for $300 and another dealer is asking $800 for the same grade and both are PCGS - similar look so it isn't a toning anomaly thing! I've not seen such a wide disparity before - unless toning was involved.

If you look at "sold" coin values in the holders and varieties you are talking about, you'll find the same thing, a wide difference. Also check the pops for the coins, and you'll find for example that PCGS might have only certified a handful of a particular coin, and NGC a boatload. Are their standards different, I'd say yes, and buyers agree.

PCGS is doing stronger drugs than NGC. They're both hallucinating, but PCGS is having the better trip.

It's mostly about supply and demand, in this case population of a grade of a coin

Disabuse yourself of the notion that either of their prices have any basis in reality.

I use the auction records available on NGC's website as a price guide on higher-end coins.

There are many different places to find real-world results from actual sales, free of charge. Heritage has almost two million archived sales alone for you to peruse. Publishers don't decide prices. People do.

Quoted for truth.

A price list is a starting point. Ultimate you have to decide what you want to give or take for a coin.
