Topher, or Jim1953, or anyone else, I have no central vision, so I'm not sire what will come out. I would like to know what a good price to offer for about 1860 Canadian cents. I have a chance to pick them up, and wondered if there is any listing for them, other than coin prices rag. Thanks,
Dick

Hi livingdinosaur,

I like to view the early Canadian small cents in the same light as the American wheat cents. I would say that assuming they are all in circulated condition, an offer of 2 or 3 cents apiece would be fair. $50 might be a good amount for 1860 cents.

I agree with Skelly. There are a few to look for from 1939-1950's, but in general they will be fairly common. You will want to specifically look for the 1949 high relief and 1955 NSF varieties. Those will be the real keepers, the rest aren't too uncommon. There are some other varieties you can look for, but don't carry the same premium as those two examples.

Thanks for the responses. I over-estimated the value for the batch, but it won't break me if I am accepted. I don't sell any coins, just buy for my own interests. One day, someone will, maybe. I woul like to know where I can find a source of information re the varieties, and other anomalies in that area. I always like die cracks, (severe), Cuds, etc, so I thought the odds might bring me a DDO, or maybe a DDR.. Whatever. I don't have many Canadian coins, so this will fill a gap. Thanks to you both, "from south of Your" border. later: I'm used to being able to scroll back, to refer to a post, and I missed something I wanted to ask about. What is the NSF? I understand this batch is heavy on the '40's. Maybe I'll get lucky!

Good luck with that...I hope they haven't been searched through. Pay close attention to 1947, 49, 53, 55, 65. To tell the rarities, drop over to jandm.com and check out their catalog pages on pennies with photos of the varieties.

NSF = No Shoulder Fold. The coins of 1953 (cents up until 1955) had two different portraits of QEII. One had a shoulder strap, the other did not, the easiest way to tell, however, is by the placement of the lettering in relation to the rim denticles. I use Pierre Charest's "The Book of Canadian Coins and Their Varieties". J&M and Calgary Coin are both good for online photos of varieties.

Thpher, is that book available, or is it out of print?
I also made a visit to the J&M coin and Jewelry store. I was lurking around there, looking for some reference books, but no luck. I'll go back and "case the joint", that way I'll know what, where, and how much! I found the NSF info on another post, and also the info re the 1953 five cent "mule", and how to identify it. Re the 1800+ cents, I ubderstand the seller bought a collection, and the cents were a small part of the collection. That infers, to me, that the searchinng has been done "for me". The seller only "flips" the collections, or lots, as they may be. He is not a collector, to any serious degree, rather a seller on ebay. He is, by the way, my s-son.He has been collecting for a longer time, (actively, than I), but he is still a "newbie". He has had to work too hard to support himself, to spend much time becoming a serious collector. He has been on ebay, for some time. I am not a seller, only an ebay buyer, now, and again. My hope is that the original owner of the collection, knew a whole lot more than I, about coins in general, amnd varieties in particular. I am a"newbie", too, just since 2005, on Coppercions.com, when I joined the forum, and found out about varieties. Before , I collected anything that wasn't "nailed down", but mostly Mexican.. Then only errors, and RPM's. Most of my collecting, over the years, has gone to feed the kids, and they were well fed!. So much for my life story, whichI did not intend to disclose. No harm done, those who know me know all about me, anyway. My posts give me away!

KurtS, I see what you mean! I was looking at some iof the cent prices, (or values, as trthe case may be). There are some real hot ones! Thanks for putting me onto them... In case you can't make heads or tails of what I type, I think Topher knows, but I am "legally blind". I have no central vision, and therefor, no drivers license, either. The preipherifal, *sp) is fine. So please bear with me.

livingdinosaur,

Here is the book. It's available on CD-ROM, so you could easily put it on a big screen to see. The 2008 version just came out last month.

I just ordered the book. I may get the CDROM later, if necessary. Thanks. They work with PAyPAl, and that'is very good!
Thanks for the info.
12/30/07I have received the CDROM!! I wanted the book! I am unable to install the CDROM, because I can't read the serial number. Every combination I could think of to resister it failed: "wrong serial number". I attempted to contact Charest by email, explaining what happened. Anyone having similar problems?

Problem resolved. There weren't enough "xeros" placed on the CD, and When I added another, as told by charest, in an email, the file installed, and everything is all "hunky-dory". How many of you "kids" remember that phrase?

Remember the "1864 Canadian coins" I mentioned, recently? Well it turns out that there are 1364 cents, and 500 nickels, all '50's are in the batch. And, I got them today. They will be coming in , soon. I found out about the nickels, and "sweetened the pot" a bit, and the offer was accepted. None of the coins that were listed individually, were sold,, so I guess My CDROM will get a work-out! If not with them, maybe with the 26 rolls I'm getting from Daggit. Have also located 500 more nickels, (no info yet) but seems they are,or, (were ecidence, or a confiscated thing,), and I will be getting info on them, later. The guy isn't a collector. A retired Police Officer. He wants $250. for them. Hood price? Any afvice welcome. I know NOTHING about Canadian coins, period! Thanks,
Dick

$250 sounds awful high for 500 nickels. I can get a roll of GVI nickels for $5.95 from Colonial Acres. No chance of finding a rarity in there, but that sounds like an awfully high premium on the off chance that you do find one. I don't know that I'd go much higher than $35-40 tops to be honest.

Thanks Topher. They will be "researched" this weekend, and I'll be informed as to what is there, then I'll make an offer, (if I lke what I hear).
