I've come across this scan of a five dollar note on a website while searching for first and last prefix's . From my understanding I didn't think any $5 had a AA prefix after 1992. Can anyone help me with this?

Brett - I'm assuming the note has Fraser/Evans as signatories - 1995 was a bit of a throwback as it did have AA as it's first prefix. BA is usually the first prefix for the years after 1992. This website may be of use to you: http://australiancoinsandbanknotes.com/Pedro

The earliest $5 notes (1992), the first two digits did not stand for the date. This is a 1992 note.

Intriguing Enlil. Have done a little more hunting around and haven't found a website other than the direct RBA site that indicates that BA was the first $5 prefix for 1995. The following site indicates that the serial number information has been prepared by the RBA and for 1995 it includes details of an AA95 issue range. No reference to AA95 being test notes like there is for some of the 1997 issues. http://www.polymernotes.org/other_c...umbering.htmAs they say, curiouser and curiouser. Others eg https://www.therightnote.com.au/pol...nknote-sale/http://www.intnumis.com.au/product_...ucts_id/6993The RBA does have a disclaimer in relation to the accuracy of their records so possibly an anomaly in relation to the AA95s. In a quick check around I also haven't found anyone yet who is selling BA95s as the first $5 prefix for 1995 - where available all are selling AA95s as first prefix. Pedro

Thats definitely a 1995 $5 note There was an article in the March C & B magazine about this very issue AA95 notes were used in various NPA collector issues and were also available from tellers at the Reserve Bank. This is why Catalogs and dealers list this as the first prefix for 1995

Brett,
What are the signatories on the reverse side of the note? That is your first point of reference as to the date range.
There were both 1992 AA95 prefixes and 1995 AA95 prefixes - the colour, bands and signatories determine the date.
Cheers

It is quirks like this which I think make 90s polymer notes so interesting. You will notice that the AA95 circulation notes all have serial numbers between about 024000 and 030000. This is thought to be because they were NCLT notes which weren't used for the various folders issued in 1995 but were instead handed out at the RBA tellers. As the AA95 notes are in fact NCLT notes it could be argued that the first prefix for circulation notes are still BA95. For this reason I have got hold of these as I think BA95 notes will be quite rare.
