This came out of a box of halves last week. The lowest mintage coin Ive ever found in almost 2 years of searching :-) here is a snippet and a link: http://www.nytimes.com/2002/09/01/n...-dollar.html"Long Island has its own commemorative coin; has had it for a long time. The Long Island Tercentenary Half Dollar was created as legal coinage by an act of Congress in 1936 to help defray the cost of the Island's commemoration of the arrival of its first white settlers 300 years before. Those Dutch colonists sailed into Jamaica Bay in 1636, bought a 118-mile strip of land from 13 Algonquin tribes and called it Lange Eylandt. The event is celebrated on the Long Island half dollar, with the front depicting a male Dutch settler and an Algonquin tribesman. The reverse shows a Dutch sailing ship of that era." and now Ive learned something too :-)

Congrats! That's certainly an unexpected find - if only the coin could tell how it got in that box of halves!

Outstanding find. Concur this is a low mintage coin ... certainly relative to Modern commemorative totals - 81,800 of the Long Island Tercentenary Half Dollar were distributed. This is not a difficult coin to obtain today in dealer stock ... but an amazing find in a bank roll at face value. Your coin likely grades XF based upon the photos provided. Congratulations ... enjoy the coin ... hopeful that the history, design beauty and stories behind this series might perhaps inspire some further level of interest from you. David

Very nice! That would be an awesome coin to find! I just found a Netherlands Antilles coin in my half dollar roll! That is another reason I like half rolls don't know if you could find a commemorative :)

Wow Bobby. I for one did not ever think to look for that section here. Thank you. I guess I should look more closely at the side bars.
