I collect slabbed modern commemoratives and only collect NGC and PCGS MS 69/70 coins myself. I would like to know how the rest of you feel. Is there a need to collect the same issues from the mint!; I do know that on certain issues it is desirable to have the mint issues especially the mint sets. I do have some but 96% of my collection does not. Just curious about this and want to thank all for any input.

All the coins in my collection of the modern issues are in their original capsules as received from the Mint and stored in coin trays to make then easy to view in groups. I keep the original boxes and COAs in which the capsules came in a plastic bin - just in case I ever decide to part with the coins and want to re-assemble the original packages.
I'm not very concerned whether the coins in my collection are MS-69 or MS-70. I've purchased them for the history they represent and enjoy them in their original state.
There may come a time in the distant future when the modern commems in their original packaging command a premium, but I don't think it will ever reach the same level as with the distribution materials for the classic series as there is just much more of the modern material available.

I don't collect them in mint state. I love and pounce on any that had been circulated or used as pocket pieces though if the price is right.

Early commems in circ condition for me. The sweet spot for me is a dirty VF.

Hmmmm ... I have been purchasing the modern UNC $1 issues for the prior 5 years or so ... not sure if I will ever get truly interested enough to assemble a complete modern set. All my modern commemorative are maintained in their OGP ... which admittedly is taking up a growing amount of space. My commemorative interest lies in the classic silver set ... of which I have two. A complete MS type set ... PCGS/CAC certified. A 98% complete circulated type set ... all in PCGS holders. My collecting passion is honestly circulated classic silver commemorative ... of which I have written many threads/pages in this forum. David

Because on space, I was putting mine in Lighthouse coin trays. Of course in the original capsules.
But I am still having a space problem, so I put the capsules in double row 2X2 boxes. The OGP I keep in a storage container.

I own a few modern commems, and they reside in their OGP.
Since I don't actively collect them (the few I have were gifts or are special to me) this method of storage is the only way to go.
Should I ever get around to assembling enough cash and time to begin collecting either an MS or circulated classic commem set (not sure which), those will likely stay in or end up in PCGS slabs.

Gentlemen I do respect the responses thus far and I will say they may very well command top dollar one day. I would like to add that I feel the same way about the historical significance that commemoratives hold but I still feel that graded commemoratives have their place too. I also believe the pro's far outweigh the cons mentioned in your comments. That is my humble opinion. I'm looking forward to other options on this topic.

I collect the modern dollars and all are in ogp for now. Trying to work on a good viewing/storage situation.
My Classic commems are in dansco albums, I also have a few in pcgs holders.

I have purchased all the modern dollars from the mint sence 1996 and have subsequent acquired the others over the years none of which are in graded holders. My early commemoratives have been a lifetime endeavor started in the 70's and housed in a Whitman album. I have purchased many graded but have cracked most of them out and placed them in the album with four type coins to go.

My only classic commemorative coins (two half dollars) are in my 7070.
My modern commemorative coins are in the OGP, except for two half dollars and one commemorative dollar. These are is their appropriate holes in the 7070.

At this stage of my "career", I don't have any classic commemorative coins. I have a number of moderns from the past 20, but I haven't purchased every one every year. Like those that have already replied with similar collections, I have them in the OGP and yes, space is becoming an issue. But isn't that a good problem to have, really?

I have 4 classic collections going. 1st is the Lowball set in PCGS holders. Then I I'm working on a holed set in a dansco and then a circ set in a dansco. Several of these have issues that would prevent them from being graded and some not low enough for the lowball set. And then there is the Lafayette grading set.

Like most of the other series I have going, I have two sets, one in a Dansco album and one PCGS graded set.
I only like the UNCs. They seem more like coins to me. Since, I put them in to a Dansco anyway, I aquire them by quality first and price second. Since I could not care less about OGP (at least where these are concerned) I find great deals on quality coins because, "they are missing the OGP" or the COA or "the box is damaged".
I also have a PCGS MS70 collection going, for no other reason than it is just another aspect of collecting. This I fear, I will never complete unless I hit the lottery

I thought I would take some pictures .. to show what a storage problem is like after 45 years. Two safes and a Bank security box are pretty much full. Overflow safe is full If I added the OGP, I would need a third safe. I was using Lighthouse coins cases. For now I just put the capsules in the 2X2 boxes. It saves a lot of space.
