On a program on TV this morning, December 13, 2007, they showed millions of cents just lying on the ground. This was Channel 5 here in the Midwest at about 8:50AM. The scene was in Rockefeller Plaza, New York. This was some kind of charity drive and was intended for pennies (cents) only. They called them PENNIES of course. The exact amount was not known yet but it was estimated to be well over $1,000,000. People were shown dumping them out of bags and the people on the show were walking all over them. They would probably just be shoveled up, put in wheel barrels and taken somewhere to be counted by machines, of course.
Now just think about how many are Wheat Cents, how many may be an 09S, 09S VDB, 14D, 22 Plain, 31S, etc. Being banged together, walked on, shoveled, bagged and then put into a coin counting machine.

Be still my heart. You know that collectors in the area are already trying to get permission to look at them.

Doesn't bother me a bit. I only hope the proceeds help the neediest people and/or animals.

I'm o.k. with the mass collections for two reasons. First, as stated, the funds are going (hopefully) to folks that need them this time of year. Second, the fewer key dates out there for collectors only makes them rarer and more valuable. Theoretically this makes the ones that we all have that more more valuable. It may not be this simple but that is how I have been looking at it.

100 million cents, that is .03% of all the Lincoln cents ever produced. The chance that one of them is an SVDB is roughly .015%

And yes I do collect pennies. I have a complete set of english pennies from 1860 to 1970.

I like that ebay idea. The people running that chairity drive should try that. Put the entire mountain of cents on ebay and let the bidding begin. Possibly some great big dealers would buy the mess.
I wonder just how long it would take a banks coin counter to count all those? Then just what are they going to do with them?
