This is apparently a promissory note issued by the Confederate States of America for the fifty cents, back in 1863. I have seen many examples of Confederate printed currency, but a promissory note? Fascinating piece of American history! I am looking to ascertain it's value...in United States currency...in 2015.

Many Confederate notes promised payment on conclusion of the war or ratified peace.

This note is listed in 14th ed World Paper Money 1368-1960 (p 370) as no 56.

That's a nice note. I'm pretty sure all of the confederate currency issued were promissory notes. They state on them, as does yours, that six months after the ratification of a treaty, the note will be paid out.

Yours looks to be in pretty good shape, and value is all about condition if its not a very rare note. A quick look showed prices for comparable notes between $35 and $95. There are a lot of them out there for sale, so I don't know what you may actually get. It is a very cool piece of American history!

According to Slabaugh's book "Confederate States Paper Money" the note is a T-59. There is also a similar note, the T-65 dated Feb. 17, 1864. There were 1,831,517 printed and values run from $10 in good to $50 in uncirculated (Those values may be a little dated). Of note, the T-59 and the T-65 are the only pieces of Confederate currency with printed signatures.
