Grease filled die, but sometimes the grease is just a binder, the numerals filled with highly compressed gunk, perhaps a mixture of dirt and very fine metal particles as well as grease, that is enough to competely obliterate the numerals on the coin.
This happenstance can produce what is seen here, which to my mind, has resulted in a rather desirable error coin.
You just need to be very careful to closely examine the date area, to determine without any doubt that the date has not been dishonestly removed.
