The newest edition to my fish themed collection came in the mail today:

1979-Finnish-Marka

1979-Finnish-Marka

It celebrates the 750th anniversary of the city of Turko. Unfortunately it will be the last coin that I buy for a while because my furnace needs fixing.

25 fishes at once! I like the desings of both sides - despite that Turku is my home city. The Finnish commemoratives are quite different if you compare these to "mainstream commemoratives".I mean they look more like medals.

Don't think it's primarily a question of where a coin comes from but of certain design elements. Many collector coins from Finland do, for example, not have a raised or elevated rim (don't know if that is the right term in English but you get the idea). This is a feature that many medals but few coins have. The GDR (East Germany) made quite a few collector coins in that style, for example, but the Federal Republic never did.

Also, on many coins (but also medals) the inscription is along the rim. Pieces that have the text in horizontal or diagonal lines look less conventional. And then, many Finnish commemorative and collector coins have a somewhat abstract look that one would rather expect from contemporary medals ...
