I am ..a little surprised ..well maybe not
suprised ...that your upgrading your 7070.

There's always a nicer coin to be had! I have a budget because part of me wants to buy them all. For example, I recently saw that a 1917-S Lincoln in MS65 RD went for $10k+. I can't afford that - never will - so, I try to enjoy what I buy. Like you said, there's a lot of ways to collect.

I am curious if others put much thought into planning for the purchases of coins, for sets they might be trying to complete?

The last few months I've been saving for either a certified 1880CC or 1885CC GSA a local dealer has. (haven't decided which yet). I also tend to save awhile for any upcoming show.

Typically, I have a series list I go by. That is, I prefer certain series over others and will buy them first. If those aren't available, I go down the list till I find a coin that fits my tastes/price range. I don't usually go looking for any particular coin or date. I've found that if you tend to look for certain coins/dates, you will typically settle for what's available rather than what you'd like to have for your collection. I've bought duplicate dates instead of a sub par coin of a date I need for a set. I guess completing a set is less important to me than the quality of the coins I have in those sets.
