So I had a customer who realized too late he had the wrong Paypal Confirmed address. He'd paid, and I always immediately print a shipping label the moment I get paid to get the tracking into the system for the buyer.

First time this has ever happened to me. I've been very lucky, I guess. So, I cancelled the sale and refunded him to redo the transaction, only to discover that having cancelled the sale, I couldn't get my shipping back. Had I done the label refund first, the usual mechanism in my Selling console would work but that stuff disappears when you cancel the sale.

The buyer - a guy with 50 Feedbacks and less than 2 years, knew the solution.

The email which they send you confirming you've printed a label has a link towards the bottom where you can click to kill and refund the label. This link works even if you've already cancelled the sale. Nothing else will.

So, those of you who already knew this can laugh at me. Those who didn't, you're welcome.

Just a little more insulation for the seller.

I used that link once a while ago. If memory serves be right it was a while before the funds for the shipping were credited back to my Paypal but they did credit them back.

Under ebay's new system cancelling a sale can result in a defect.

Truth. In this case, I'm unworried because the cancel led to a real sale to the same buyer, and he will back me if I need to contest it. For the record, I did the "high BIN, low offer" thing.

You can cancel the shipping and get your money back. Call support if you need to learn how to do that.

I've had to cancel shipping more than once in my 16 years on ebay, just never in conjunction with a customer refund. In fact, this was my first-ever refund.

I've been going with the high BIN low offer deal for about a year & it works great. I'm not as happy with the whole defect system. 2 out of the 3 defects I got over the last year I also got positive feedback from the buyer. A request from the buyer about a return or a shipping issue is an automatic defect. It would seem logical for the defect to be awarded depending on the level of customer service in the event of an issue. IMO an automatic defect reduces the incentive for a non-customer oriented seller to try to make things right.

One of my 3 defects is from an item that USPS messed up not once but twice. My buyer got tired of waiting & even though I had repeatedly offered a refund they went through the ebay system to "request the status of the shipment". Once that happened I got a defect. I immediately gave them a refund & the item showed up at their house 30 days later.

Another defect I got from a buyer who said the watch I sold them wasn't as described. It was a advertising watch made for Snap-On tools & the only place it said Fossil was inside the back cover......& I had pictures of that in my listing. The buyer returned the watch, gave me positive feedback & I still got a defect.

ebay has decided that certain things make a buyer less likely to continue shopping. A request for a return or information as to why the item hasn't showed up within a certain time period is thought to be detrimental to their shopping experience. In the case of a return it depends on the reason it's requested. Some returns don't result in a defect.
