Not a bad looking large cent - I think better than the average 1821 found, but it does have some problems specially on the obverse,
The reverse is virtually problem free IMO, and not corroded, just slightly rough.

Looking forward to your comments and opinions.

Thanks.

Very nice coin and a tough date to find especially in higher grades. Die variety N-2 which has an R.1 rarity designation. Detail sharpness is EF-45 but the obverse pitting nets this coin an EAC 30. Great coin overall. You're making me envious again GERMANICVS.
1821 N-2 R.1 45/30.

Obverse XF40. Reverse 45. Nicely struck and a good example. The 182x coronets are tough to find in this grade the obverse surface issues will pull a detail grade however it has an overall nice eye appeal

Thank you for your opinions which I find very helpful.

I still struggle a bit trying to determine an EAC grade. Going by the book, (CQR) I first determine the condition - in this case 'average' condition. Then, for the sharpness grade - in this case EF40.
Now, for the most subjective part - determining the net grade after deduction for defects. How much do the obverse pits/damage detract?
Personally I would deduct 20 to 25 points as I tend to grade conservatively. So my net would be EAC 15 to 20.
This is subjective and different people will evaluate differently.

I decided to deduct it two grades for the pitting and porosity and one grade for the mark on the neck. If I would deduct it a grade more I'd deduct one grade for the color but that's it. I feel deducting the coin 25 points is a bit harsh. Of course Westcoin made a deduction of 20 so maybe I'm a bit optimistic.

In retrospect I think you are correct, and I was too conservative, Celticsoul.

Pretty subjective, still, isn't it?

Most early coppers have defects of one sort or another, so I can see some kind of logical approach is needed in grading, and this is still a pretty good approach.
As CQR says - perfect coppers, specially the early dates, are as rare as hens teeth.

I will post a few more that should be fun net grading.

Please do that. It really helps us hone our net grading skills and allows us to see what other copperheads think and compare their thoughts to our own.

Germanicvs, have you purchased the EAC Grading book yet? A great read, it has taught me a lot on EAC grading standards, I'm very lucky in 2 weeks the EAC convention will be held near my house and I will be attending, I've already signed up for the free EAC grading seminar that is going to be held there.

Thank you for the tip, westcoin. I shall be visiting the U.S in the summer and will try to get a copy then. Yes, you certainly are fortunate to have the EAC convention held so close to your home.
