I have seen pcgs or ngc slabs with "simpson" on them and can't find much about it in a cursory Google search. Was it a hoard or a guy or a family and what's the story? Also, what types of Coins and roughly how many are slabbed "simpson" thanks

Those slabs are named for this guy:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bob_R._Simpson

Major League coin collector, as well. He has interest in multiple areas of issue, from Patterns to Lincolns (he owns the finest examples of all the bronze 1943's and steel 1944's, last I heard).

The Google Search that would have nailed this for you (no, I didn't know until I Googled it) was "Simpson coin collection."

thanks dave. That's a good read and a touch of knowledge to store away. I wonder how and why his pieces come to market. And I saw a monster slabbed Sunnywood/Simpson in a pat legend sale. Wonder what the connection was?

That usually means that both men owned the coin. And I'm sure you're already aware of Sunnywood.

To elaborate a little on why you see his name (Simpson) on some slabs is that it's to show a pedigree. It does sometimes seem a little odd to see a pedigree listed on a slab for a collector that is still alive and in this case, still very much active in collecting. To me it makes sense to make note on a slab of a pedigree such as Eliasberg, or Garrett, or Norweb. Collectors that are from the past, kind of like the hall of fame in music and in sports.

I've even seen dealers names noted as a pedigree on a slab. For example I've seen some noting a pedigree of Larry Shapiro. That just seems odd to me, but hey, it's just my own opinion.

Ya, I like top notch pedigree and a billionaire dosent buy junk so I can see why name like his would add a certin cache. To that end...

***To SD or anyone, if you come across a sonnywood/Simpson slabbed coin like the legend one out there for sale please put it in the back of your heads to let me know. Thanks***

Here is some interesting information on the Simpson Collection and why Mr. Simpson is breaking up some of the sets he has. Legend has been his main dealer for many years, and Laura Sperber has let out some insight on the reasoning behind the recent sales he has made.

The amazing comment is that his collection makes the current Pogue collection look low grade in comparison. If that is true (I assume it is, from what I know of his Registry sets) then WOW!
