I see it is a common practice under the "coin lots and collections" section on ebay to list a some coins along with a whole bunch of random items like baseball cards, stamps, silverware etc. What are your thoughts on these? Can they be good buys? I have not seen many coins worthwhile buying in them but the other items look interesting. http://www.ebay.com/itm/US-Coins-Lo...em234ea37eebEdited by buddy16cat 04/12/2015 6:05 pm

It's all marketing. You'll almost never get good value bidding on these. Even though it doesn't say 'unsearched', the pictures are staged to put that thought in your head.

"Un-searched is funny". Just because you didn't search doesn't mean someone else didn't. It is the first thing I do when I buy a lot. Just got 65 Indian heads, unfortunately only an 1868 as far as better dates and it went into my Whitman book.

Yeh, never see many decent coins in these. They would be better selling decent coins and throwing in some junk just for a bonus. I bought coins that included notes and just treated them like a bonus and didn't calculate them when coming up with a max bid.

Anyone who doesn't think they know precisely what's in those lots they're selling, are the customers they're looking for. Fortunately, you know better.

IMO these are just a way for a very smart seller to try to sell the junk they have to a very stupid buyer who likely believes that there will be a find of a lifetime in one of these lots. The seller knows exactly whats in these lots (nothing of any value) and will likely get many times their items worth from unsuspecting buyers.

They kinda annoy me, I guess since I feel like they insult the intelligence of a buyer. The worse ones are the ones where everything fits in a certain container that makes you think they were found in there. Like property of Las Vegas Jail evidence bags from the 1950's with slabbed silver eagles lol. I would never bid on them, but they are the most annoying things for me to see.

It's hard to insult something which, for many buyers, is merely a concept.
