Here are some updated photos. I rinsed a lot of the gunk off. (In most cases I would leave a given coin in its original condition; in this case, there was simply too much gunk to not attempt to gently restore the coin).

I think you did a great job of cleaning it up.

This is one of those "exceptions" we talk about when discussing cleaning. Honestly, the coin looks to still have issues - I'd like to see all that green gone.

That's a great find. Looks way better already. It actually looks to be pretty high grade.

Thanks guys. I wish I could still remove some of the problems I just hate to mess with it too much as the surfaces that are not damaged look quite good for being in the ground for who knows how long! I'll keep y'all posted (no pun intended)

Get the gunk off it and you'll have a good shot of getting an extremely nice coin.

I know there are many negative opinions about TPGs on this forum, but I would probably send the coin into one of their conservation services. I believe that the services offered by NCS are reasonable in price for coins in this value range.

I'm 99% sure it would be rejected for conservation.

OP - Looks like some good old iron oxide (rust). A solution of EDTA might be helpful.

My images always tend to be rotated 90 degrees. Perhaps an admin can help me for future posts.

Wow!! congratulations! That looks to have AU details to me. I clean such as this in my ultrasonic cleaner; it gets rid of anything loose on those surfaces. I'm in the jewelry business so it's an easy do for me.

Nice coin!

Your image is saved at 640x480, so that is how it will be displayed here. Make sure your software is not rotating the image based on some other criteria.
