1834 half. My camera does't really catch any detail at all. I rinsed it off a bit; I'll send updated pictures. couldn't believe it!

Congrats, btw. Love to see more detailed pictures to see if we can get an Overton attribution on it.

We have been metal detecting so many times, and we find more junk than anyone but still have an absolute blast. Before the 1834, the earliest coin we found was probably a stikin Lincoln from the 60's.

I couldn't help but think we bypassed the Kennedy clad, Kennedy 40%, Kennedy 90%, Franklin, walker and seated! I never could have imagined! Ok I'll relax now!

This coin could be considered in the same way as ancient silver coins that have been retrieved from direct in ground soil burial.
For cleaning, lemon juice, vinegar and olive oil have all been used successfully.

Just a thought ... Might it be a contemporary counterfeit? What does it weigh?

JDbarrick, try using your cell phone to take the picture. I find my cell phone takes better pictures than my expensive camera.

Lets just say the person who found this coin wanted to sell it would this be one of those rare cases where putting some silver polish and acid to this thing might make it at least distinguishable again? I feel like trying to sell this thing as cleaned would be easier than selling it in it's present condition.

Great find, unless is counterfeit (not saying it is, it looks legit from here IMHO).

Counterfeits are present in most setting these days. With that said I found the coin under about 8-9 inches of earth near an old abandoned factory dating back to the mid 1800's.

Anyone have any ideas how to gently restore the coin? Wouldn't normally do this but I can't stand the verdigris (spelling) on the coin. Thanks!

That's contemporary counterfeit; one made in the 1830's, and meant to pass in circulation. Bust halves were a prime target, and the amount of verdigris here may suggest the copper of a contemporary counterfeit. This is a collecting area all its own, with dozens of known varieties. Lots of info at this website:
