There is, of course, a VAM here - they're all VAMs - but that's not what you're asking. There are no "fabulous" 1880-S VAMs and it's a difficult year to attribute. I'll give it a shot.

Sounds like it was one of the best $50 I spent on a coin. Definitely better than the last Morgan I bought and posted here. Thanks for all the replies, I do believe I will keep it in the old holder at least for the time being even if it could possibly be graded up.

Whut? Edit: I actually had to post that and stop to laugh for a while. No, don't take it out of that slab. Ever. That may be the finest MS63 in existence.

The only gold this one needs is already on the periphery. If you can't tell it's undergraded at 63, you need a new hobby.

Well I got the MS63 right, an easy MS65 with a good shot at PL today. Heck even back in the early days of ANACS this was a coin that was grossly undergraded.

In the interest of completeness, it bears mentioning that toning can hide some pretty serious flaws. This coin has more going on than first meets the eye at the jaw and above the eye, and in-hand I may not go 65 with it. 64+ at worst, though, and I think it may have toned in the slab.

Quote: I think it may have toned in the slab. My experience with the really old ANACS slabs is exactly that, my DMPL dollar was almost solid white with a peripheral light golden brown color, and now the whole coin is a dark brown and no longer very attractive, probably could use a dip today if I ever crack it out.

I imagine that's mostly because these coins have had the longest time of all to change in the slab.
