Hey guys!

Picked this guy up the other week, and I have very little knowledge of anything but US coins. Anyone able to verify authenticity? From the research I've done it seems every coin from this era was just a little different, which makes me question if this one is real or not.

Sukardnam Nice Class 1 Counterfeit - based on a very cursory look.

I would need to look more closely at higher resolution pictures to be sure because the die work is so poor. The year 1818 is transitional for Zacatecas and did not use the 1820-1822 matrix so it should be crude but not this crude. If the coin is original it would mean that there was a significantly different set of die punches in use than any I have catalogued.

What is the weight and density?

What does the edge look like?

If I saw this on ebay I would likely bid close to $100 just to know for sure. It is more valuable as a counterfeit than as a genuine coin.

Thanks for replying guys! I've added a few pics of the edge. Weight of the coin is 25.6 grams, and it is 2.1mm thick. Picked him out of a gold buyers scrap pile with the intention of ebaying it, but I certainly dont want to throw a counterfeit up there.

I have no doubt based on the weight that you quote that the coin is a counterfeit. It is definitely not a new genuine die variety. The issue that remains is what is the value of your counterfeit?

The weight is actually low enough to make me very suspicious that the coin could be a 1950s Numismatic Forgery and not a Contemporary Circulating Counterfeit.

As an early Numismatic Forgery it would be worth $30 but as a Class 1 as much as $100.

If you would like to sell it - I am buying new examples for my second edition of my book.

I'd be happy to sell it to someone who wont use if for devious purposes lol. Otherwise it will just end up in the melt bucket. Feel free to email me!
