While the PCGS price guide app is super convenient to use on mobile devices (for use when at a coin show or coin shop), the prices on that guide are obviously for PCGS slabbed coins. I've used USA Coin Book and Numismedia FMV guides, but prices are often very different, understandably so based on what each resource purports to provide:

USA COIN BOOK has indicated, "our prices are simply estimates of what we think the value would be (a rough balance between what a dealer would pay a collector for a coin and what a collector would pay a dealer for a coin)".

NUMISMEDIA FMV says its values "refer to the price a dealer is asking for a coin, which is somewhat over his wholesale price."

Do folks here typically use these resources? Do you find the Red Book is low or high?

Thanks for your help.

For lower value coins I usually use numismedia but for anything over $100, I will take the time to look up completed auctions on ebay first.

The Red Book is high retail, while NumisMedia is a more realistic retail. Both are just guides, a place to start negotiations. Completed auction sales are probably the most accurate, since they are actual prices paid for items.
