I discovered this coin in a 1936 BU penny roll I won on Proxibid a few weeks ago. I am quite familiar with the three major DDO's for that year and their respective die markers. However, with this coins mushy devices, it's hard to see anything, other than it indeed appears to be DDO #1, the strongest of the three.

I've ruled out #2 because the left leg of the R in LIBERTY appears to be present and I do not see the die chip (dot) above VDB on Lincoln's shoulder.

And I've dismissed #3 because it doesn't share any of the characteristics of this coin.

What do you all think?

Thanks in advance!

Let's not take me for a Final Answer but frankly I'm seeing a Dryer Coin. It's one of only a very few things which will account for the rim beginning to expand and the letters turning to mush.

I'm going to side with SD on this one. It looks like its been in the dryer for a decent amount of time, the rim looks like its starting to enlarge too.

I have seen Dryer Coins, this coin has flat square rims and is of normal thickness. Dryer Coins will begin to exhibit much wider, rounded, bulbous rims and become smaller in diameter. I don't believe that this is a Dryer Coin.
But what about the DDO? Did you guys notice the obvious doubling (not just widening) on the date and motto?

Dryer Coins manifest in a lot of ways, and it takes quite a while for the rim to become heavily involved in any event. I am reasonably certain that this is a Dryer Coin.

Now that you make me look closer, though, I'm seeing the doubling, especially on the 9 and 3. None of the listed DDO's show a lateral split at the bottom of the 9, so I'm at the limit of my knowledge. DDO #2 seems closest to me. It would truly be awful if this is a DDO Dryer Coin.

But if it's not a Dryer Coin, what caused the appearance of the surfaces? We're all throwing out theories, and a dryer is the simplest explanation. Doesn't mean it's the correct one.

Even if it were a variety, the value is long gone.
