Jack, how do you spot those quarter stock halves?

Quote:
Jack,
How do you find these halves struck on quarter stock. Do you look at the side of the rolls and look for thin halves or what?

I cannot tell just from looking at the side of a roll.

With the coins unwrapped and stacked in my right hand I shuffle the top coin from the stack into my left hand creating a new stack as I look at the dates or have to flip the coin over to check the date before I transfer it to my left hand stack. As the coins are shuffled on top of one another some will make a different sound. I set those aside and weigh them. This one sounded like it was silver so I had to go back a few coins and look at it again. Seeing that it was a 1971D I knew there was a good chance that it was another quarter stock. If it had been any other year like most of the other odd sounding ones are I would have just thrown it in the bad to weight later but I made sure to put this one in a safe place until I got home and could verify the weight.

Nice finds Silver Eagle, I always like to see those nice numbers. I just got another bank on the hook, One of the four called be back and stated they would order the halves for me, and I didn't have to become a customer. So now I have 5 banks I will be purchasing from.

I sold 1 box $500.00 face of 40% halves today and bought these gold Swiss 20 franc pieces. If you have to get out of Dodge in a hurry they are alot easier to carry.

2 boxes

A 40%er, a proof, a worn out 1983, and what appears to have been a Pope stickered coin.

4 Boxes...

3 were skunks...

1 hit 12 40%ers and a 1964 Ender...

Thought I was going to do well since there were three enders total, but it didn't turn out to like I had hoped...

Hey Trapper, this may sound rude, but I am a direct person. Can you tell us approximately how much you were paid for your $500 face of 40%ers? What is the total weight of the Gold Francs. I was thinking about doing the same thing, selling a box of silver for some gold, just looking for an idea of prices buyer are paying for the silver. What type of establishment did you sell your silver at? Was it a place that strictly buys gold and silver or a business that does both buys and sells? We have both in my town.

The shop I deal with (gold silver coin & jewelry pays spot for 90%.
40% they pay $3.00 under spot it is hard to sell so the send it off to be melted.
You could sell it on ebay for spot but by the time you pay fees you would not fair any better.
There is 148 ounces of silver in a box of 40% at spot that would be $3170.00 -148 X $3.00 = $2726 that is what I paid for the 10 gold coins.
Their melt value is $2570.
The shop owner charges a premium when he sells gold or silver there is no getting around that.
They pay spot for gold, 90% silver and under spot for 40%
Kitco a big buyer is paying today $2875 for $500 face but you have to be a dealer to get those prices.
So you see even the big boys will not pay spot for 40%
So I'm happy with what I got they only cost me .50 cents apiece and a little gas.

Trapper, Thank you very much for the information, I was expecting you to tell me it was under $3.00 you got paid. I understand you can't get around the premiums the shops charge. I have only purchased and have never sold anything as of yet. This roll searching is well worth anyone's time if they want to invest in silver cheaply. I am very happy in the amount of silver I have gained over the past 5 months. I only wish I started sooner. Thanks again.
