Domain - I agree with you. I am worried the system will not recharge itself with silver as much as we would like unless the price of silver stays low for a while. One never knows and unless we keep looking, we won't know!

One other factor, might be the number of "old coin collectors" in an area, or, the size of one in particular, larger collector's hoard, that gets tossed back into the system.

Wanted to cry, lol, with the holiday chaos the bank forgot to order my weekly box, even after I brought them holiday cookies. They where extremely apologetic though. No halves this week to look through so I went through my jar of copper pennies I haven't searched yet. Found some old wheats for my book at least. Happy New Year everyone!!

If I calculate correctly, that is about 50 boxes X 1000 coins per year. Or $25,000 per year.

WOW

I am fairly sure I can get boxes of Halves. My question to you is, how do you DUMP 'em?

No way can I spent them.

Hello gents, first post!
I've been half dollar hunting about a month now and have been surprised at my finds so far! I order 4 boxes per week and have had pretty good luck. I'll post some stats later on. I'm also interested in Eisenhower hunting so any tips would be appreciated!
Good luck to everyone!

What are MEDIO-BALBOA coins?

Are they special?

Are they worth much?

Thanks, Domain555

Medio balboa coins are worth .5 of a panamanian balboa, which is pegged to the USD at 1-1. Thus, it's worth exactly 50c usd, but it may have some numismatic value.

Watch out-- before 1973, medio balboas were silver:
1/2 balboa 1930 to 1965: 0.362 ounces
1/2 balboa 1966 to 1972: 0.161 ounces

@Domain - sorry to hear of your luck with the Ike dollars. I rarely get them from banks when I ask and only in small quantities when they have some.

I'm basically a newbie on half hunting but here's my stats through 5 boxes (5,000 halves).

Franklins - 2
'64 - 5
40% - 24
Proofs - 6
1987's - 0
NIFC - 37

My silver success is hit and miss so far (again this is a small sample) - 2 of 5 boxes were skunks, another gave a single 40%er, and the other 2 were big scores.

Just got back from a fill up, and a trip to the BoA.

Hope springs eternal. Waited 1 hour plus to see a banker. Ordered a single box of half Dollars. No problems.

When they see me, they know it is MIGHTY IKE time. The branch manager was out. Then we started to visit about IKEs. With pen in hand, he asked me how many bags do you want. I told him, I will take 5 bags, if they got "em.

We talked about the fiduciary duties of the CIs. They (CIs) can not just refuse to exude a note or coin.

CIs are a go between, for Banks - Credit Unions, etc. etc. and the FED-CASH boys.

PIC below is from Dallas, I think.

Like I said, I've been searching halves for about a month or so, and feel I'm getting pretty good silver finds.
Boxes searched: 25
40% silver found: 47
90% silver found: 3

I have 4 boxes to pick up tomorrow I'll post my results when I'm done. Then 4 more boxes coming on Friday. It's really all about volume. The silver is out there, you just have to find it!

As for Ike's, I had the bank manager at my normal pickup bank to call the Cash Services department at the SF Fed. They referred her to a Fed branch in LA, who said they did not have any bags of Ike's. That was the closest Fed branch for me so I'm not sure I can try to get them from another branch. I think my bank manager is tired of calling around for me so maybe a new bank is in order?

Your average is 2 silvers per box? Sounds great to me!

I would add a bank, or switch banks, in a heart beat, if I could get IKEs on a regular-dependable-quantity basis.

I would gladly do what ever I can to get bags of Ike's, but it seems there are no sources available in my neck of the woods. Any tips on how to get them shipped to my local bank or, better yet, straight to my front door! ;)

Just a random story to tell, back in the 70s my dad and his dad used to pick up 10 or so rolls of halves every Friday. He was telling me that those were the days where you were guaranteed to find anywhere from 2-10 silvers in each roll. I will be picking up my first two boxes hopefully on Wednesday (fingers crossed), too bad you can't find silver like that anymore.
