I coin roll hunt weekly but in my area in NY it is hard to acquire half dollar boxes from banks....I buy dime boxes and quarters....No luck ever with quarters but occasionally find silver dimes. Today I went to a branch of my credit union 24 miles from me since it is in the same town as my coin guy I was going to see. I am like lets go in and see if they have any halves...They had $30 worth and I bought them all. I go to my coin guy near the bank and open roll 1....nothing.....Then I open roll 2 and see a 40% ender and dump into my hand the whole roll was 40% silver, and the same applied to roll 3.....40 half dollars of silver, not too bad for a $20 investment which I can easily sell and 4x my money. My coin guy was like it does happen and people don't know what they have. I am glad I went there, and I will definitely go there every time I go see my coin guy in that town. Also I met a guy on craiglist to see about coins, coincidentally I know the guy and tells me he gets $3000 worth of halves every month and said he would order me some boxes too from his secret bank. Not a bad day at all.

Nice haul arby
6 boxes yielded 1,90% with nice toning
does not show on scan very well
and 3,40%
Next week I have 12 boxes coming and that may be it for a while on the 29th I'm having my right shoulder joint replaced
(rotor cuff) with an artificial joint. So it will slow me
down for a while.
Best of luck and good hunting to all.

Another crappy week in my neck of the woods. 6 boxes, not single piece of silver, only 17 2002-date NIFC, 2 clad proofs, and 1 1982 no FG. I dumped a $1000. bag of nothing but bicentennial 2 weeks ago, one of my boxes this week was about 70% bicentennial, so it looks like there's a good chance that box was part of my dump from 2 weeks ago, or someone else is doing the same thing I'm doing, separating the bicentennials trying to find out if they're receiving their dumps back. The rest of the boxes had the usual 10-15% bicentennials so I don't think they were my dumps since all my other dumps that week had no bicentennial coins in them when they were dumped. If I'd came across a box with only a few bicentennial I'd have also suspected them being my dumps. My silver skunk streak is back to 18 consecutive boxes. 1 box of my last 38 has contained silver. This is aggravating.

RCook, if you aren't enjoying the hunt, it is clearly time for a break. In the town I live in I looked through 33 boxes with nothing but an impaired 2009 proof to show for it. I admit I finally marked some coins and found I was getting my marked coins (note there were also plenty of marks from other hunters) back within two weeks, so I gave up. Based on my observations, if you live in or near a city with a million or more people, then the silver may reach boxes at a reasonable rate. If you don't live in or near a bigger city, then silver simply doesn't reach boxes very often, so finds are minimal.

I am hitting a dry spell for boxes as of late, 19 boxes with 6 40%ers 1 90% and 6 Clad Proofs. and 1 40% from a teller tray. Last month I was at 26 silver half's. Hope July is the worse for the year. On a happier note Dimes are killing it for me this month with 49 found this month.

Skyshark, That's tough man. The good news is you're in a big market (Dallas) and I'll bet there is a good source somewhere in your area. I have some advice. I'd check at least 10 or 15 boxes from each bank you mentioned. If you've done this already, put them on the back burner for now or use them as dump banks. It looks like you've tried the mega banks and credit unions. I've had some of my best success at regional and local banks. They tend to operate a little different then the national brands.

Most importantly, start gathering information when you visit different banks. Figure out how and who is making deliveries. Look for a delivery truck, coin wrappers, currency straps, coin boxes, etc. This will help you decide where to buy, where to dump, and whether or not you want to search a bunch of boxes from a similar bank with similar couriers and operations. Here's an example (just an example...ymmv)...Brinks has a certain type of boxes and rolls used when rolling/boxing/sending/receiving coin from their main facility. I found a bank that used Brinks courier service but all the boxes and wrappers were generic. I figured out this particular bank had a "main bank" where they stored, rolled, and boxed their own coin.

I am assuming that San Francisco minted business strike JFK in 1987. Is that correct?
