JFK Half Dollar Roll Hunters: Silver, Proofs And Other Finds

Hello everyone!

This is my first post and I am brand new to CRH. I started CRH last month and I just opened my first box of $500 in halves this week. I primarily look for silver but I have noticed that some collect proofs and NIFC halves as well. I will post my findings as I open more and more rolls. Here is what I found in this weeks box:

40% - 68 and 65 Kennedy

I will be keeping all silver I find and most likely selling the proofs and NIFC coins. Any advise or suggestions would be much appreciated. Thank you!

Where you get the coins from is going to make little difference unless you happen to find customer wrapped rolls from someone who's cleaning out dresser drawers and there happens to be old coins there that have been laying there for 30-40 years. I get all my coins from the same two banks, one week I might get a great box with 25 oz of silver, then next 3 weeks get nothing at all. Just doing small amounts like you're doing you can't expect large returns, as I stated before I've searched probably 15-20K rolls and have come up with just over 150 oz of silver. I think 148 90% and 659 40%, so out of $150,000-$200,000 worth of halves searched there have been 807 pieces of silver or $403.50 face value. Let's ere on the conservative side and say I've searched $150,000 worth of halves that would be 300,000 coins, and have found 807 pieces of silver or an average of 1 silver coin per 372 searched, or .00269% You've searched 38 rolls 760 coins and found 5 pieces of silver an average of one silver per 152 coins, a .00657% find rate. Your find rate is almost 2.5 times mine you're just not doing the volume I'm doing.

Dheatwole,to CCF, Good luck on your search to find silver, We like picture here too so please don't forget to post those good finds. I started searching in November 2013 and its been awesome, I search 12 boxes a week and have searched over a Million coins that yielded me 725 ounces of silver, 275 Proofs, 1645 NIFC and 140 error coins. Things have slowed down this year, hoping it picks up. You just never know what will happen. I would suggest if you can to purchase more than one box at a time. There are many times out of 4 boxes only one will contain silver and that is most of the time. Good Luck and have fun.

Thanks Arby! I'll think about getting a few more boxes week to week. I have yet to return my initial box to my other bank so I want to see how that process goes. I turned in $170 worth of halves when I opened the account and there wasn't a problem. Bringing in $450 might be different. We shall see, maybe I'll up my order to $1,000 in halves and go from there. I'll post pictures next time. Still very new on how to tell if a coin is in really good shape or not. Here is a pic of my first 90% hunting!

2 boxes from yesterday.

Box 1 had 3 proofs and a ton on marked coins. Most of them were all different do I don't think they all came from the same CRH gang trying to test my territory. Obverse marked, reverse marked, lined, dotted, red, black, blue, grteen ,red marker, paint, multicolor you name it.

But of course I had to show them who runs this and over tag all of their tagged coins.

Usually when you get a tagged dump it is all the same mark. I guess this would be the equivalent of a monster box but for random tagged coins.

Box 2 had 1 proof.

Also found a beat out 1974D DDO in one of the boxes.

Rcook, thanks, you are correct in that I get small amounts. Since I have only lived in this area for about 4 months, I don't want my regular bank tellers to become irritated with me, but, I think I am about ready to ask the $500 box question there. I also now have a cu about 3 miles south that has a coin counter customers can use, so I have a dump place too. On with the hunt!
