JFK Half Dollar Roll Hunters: Silver, Proofs And Other Finds

As I said before I keep all my proof finds unless they're totally trashed. In just over a year and half of roll searching halves I've probably accumulated 100-200 proofs that were nice enough to keep. I had an extra half dollar Dansco laying around a few months ago that I'd bought cheap on ebay and decided to sort through my proof finds for the nicest proofs I had and put together a collection of circulated proofs. I still like a few years, but I figure in time they'll show up.

OK, now onto this weeks boxes. First of all I didn't receive my usual 6 boxes, the bank that normally orders me 2 boxes forgot to order them this week with the holiday and all, so I only got my 4 Brinks boxes. God still blessed me!! I'm figuring one of 3 things happened this week, a collector died and left their collection to a non collector, someone needed some vacation money, or someone needed fireworks money. My silver finds for the week were (1) 1960D Franklin, (3) 1964, (10) 1965, (23) 1966, (62) 1967, (70) 1968D, (30) 1969D. Total of 199 pieces of silver totaling 30.4352 oz. for the week. This made my 4th week since I started roll searching halves that I've broke 20 oz. of silver and the 2nd time I've broke 30 oz. for a week. Other finds included (4) 1974DDO, (1) 1982P no "FG" and (1) 1983P no "FG". Guess my only two complaints about this week (LOL), are that I didn't get my other 2 boxes and that there wasn't 1 more piece of silver to make my finds an even 200 pieces. 2016 year to date silver 94.9430 oz. I also noticed when I picked up my halves this week there were 2 extra boxes in the bank vault that someone else had ordered. This has me wondering what was in those 2 boxes and whether this is going to get me some local competition in roll hunting. Up until now as far as I know I was the only half dollar roll hunter in town. If they were looking for silver they certainly picked a good week to place their order. I did ask the head teller to make sure the other 2 boxes were picked up, while in the back of my mind hoping someone ordered them and didn't bother to pick them up. I'm just hoping this vein runs over into next week!! Oh, by the way that made a stack of silver about 16 1/2" tall.

2 boxes today that I picked up yesterday.

Box 1 had 1 40%er.

Box 2 had 2 enders. Ended up with 5 40%ers.

Trapper and Jack nice scores on the silver. Jack, a couple months ago I was receiving lots of rolls with odd denomination coins in them too, anything from pennies to golden dollars. Most were either pennies or quarters, one roll if I recall correctly had a nickel, but a couple rolls did have golden dollars in them. I guess the odd denomination coins are just a part of the game we play.

The boxes and the good ones from 2 weeks ago had coins I dumped back in April. That indicates that new silver is being dumped into the pool recently.

While some may complain about marking coins for the experienced roll hunter you can use them track trends and patterns.

While I can guarantee you marking coins to dump at bank 1 to avoid getting them back from pickup bank 2 won't work it will give you insight into the refresh rate of new coins into the pool vs you are the only one searching halves and seeing the same coins week after week vs. stagnant boxes sitting on the pallet in the vault for years. Every once in a while I get a coin in box from 3 or 4 years ago but most of them have washed themselves out of the area if even off of the face of the earth if they are returned to the fed and melted.

I am always waiting for a member from across the country to post a question about a mark or counterstamp on a half so I can claim credit for it making it halfway across the country. With over 10% of all halves I have seen marked at least once and some 7 times over I would have thought some would have surfaced by now.

As I said before there are those who admit to marking coins, those who lie about it, and those who have not had a 30 plus box skunk streak who start marking to make sure they don't get the same coins week after week after week.

I see quite a few 1974-D halves where the TRUST in the motto is marked in black.
