JFK Half Dollar Roll Hunters: Silver, Proofs And Other Finds

Earendil, I've been picking up numerous CWRs locally with the same slit up one side, though the slit is lightly (and apparently hastily) taped. Sorry you received an entire box like this

I found out 1 of the banks I routinely stop and pickup CWRs of halves from has a sniping teller. Over the last 3 months I've found 1, 40% half in about $300 CWRs. Anyway, since Christmas the teller accumulated 6 walkers and 4 Franklins, plus 22 silver Washingtons, 8 dateless SLQs, and 25 Liberty (Mercury) dimes.

You ask, how do I know this? When I stopped by for my routine pickup, she asked if I was looking for silver, and I answered yes, as well as errors, etc. She offered these coins to me so yesterday I met her after work and bought them from her for $1 less than melt value. I'm afraid tellers like her work at most banks, which is why our pickings are slim in CWRs and MWRs.

I obtained two boxes this week that were re-rolled and shipped out without re-rolling. Unless I'm mistaken 52 of the rolls were wrapped in the same type paper wrapper as shown in your picture and the others were re-rolled in the original courier wrappers. One of the boxes also had the initials D.G. on each paper roll. If these rolls belong to anyone here on the forum and they can find a way to return the coins without re-rolling them it would be appreciated so at least I'll get fresh rolls with a chance at some silver. Some of the wrappers also had tape on them. One of the boxes was taped back shut with packaging tape and the other box had been re-glued or the rolls had been put in another box, but I believe the original box had just been re-glued since the box was a little soft like it had been handled quite a bit. I'm also thinking there must be a new searcher in this area since for the last few weeks I've been getting a lot coins that are marked with a marker with a line above "In God". I think this person must be marking every coin they look at because I've found lots of coins in the past month with the same mark. This person is also marking up some really nice looking coins and NIFC coins so apparently all they are searching for is silver and have no respect for the coin collecting hobby.

Besides the two re-rolled boxes I got my other 4 boxes from the other bank this week. Of these four boxes 3 of them had an ender and they all contained silver. I ended up with 43 pieces of silver this week with 41 of them being 40%ers and the other 2 being 90%ers. The 90%ers were both 1964. The 40%ers consisted of 2 1965, 5 1966, 11 1967, 18 1968D, and 5 1969D. Other finds included 2 clad proofs and several NIFC. I'll be back at it again next week looking for bigger and better things and with God's help the silver will keep flowing. Year to date silver 19.0114 troy oz. No monster boxes yet for the 2016 Christmas season dumps but I'm still hopeful of getting one, at least until the end of February.

Arby sorry to hear about your first skunk week. I've been there and done that. It does get discouraging to open roll after roll to find no silver. In those times it just makes a proof, NIFC or common error look even better. In these instances a person has two choices either give up the hobby or keep plugging away hoping for the drought to end soon. I think my longest skunk streak this far has been 18 boxes. When I did finally hit silver I think there was only 1 piece that week but it was a beautiful sight.

John77, how long have you been searching halves? The reason I ask is that your NIFC numbers are reasonably low in my experience. In just over 2 years of searching I've found I think about 1200-1300 NIFC and am pretty sure I've had a couple weeks when I've found in access of 100 NIFC in the same week out of 6K coins.

Nice finds, trapper and RCook... and to answer you question, RCook, I've only been doing halves for about 9 months. Usually a box or so every other week, though this year I've bumped it up to two boxes a week. I'm guestimating I've gone through around 40,000 halves to this point.

Another 3 boxes coming tomorrow hopefully the silver continues to come in.
