Hello all,
I am new here but certainly not to collecting and searching rolls.I have been away in the military and now home medically retired, having lots time on my hands when my mangled body allows I thought I`d start collecting and roll search like I did years ago. Long ago it was easy for decent finds, after reading posts it looks encouraging and a few coins to be found.
I just have a couple of questions so if any one has a few minutes and wouldn't mind sharing some pointers and tips taking this up to buying boxes or bags instead of a couple of rolls at a time to search, especially halves.Any pointers that may be helpful in ordering boxes, any certain things that should be done or not done? Also when you turn in the searched rolls? I want to take my time and do more than edge search, so can any one give me some pointers on some good dates or errors to be looking for as I examine each coin? Are half's the best denomination to be searching? I chose them because my eyes are not what they used to be and bigger is easier?
Any tips and pointers would be greatly appreciated, best of luck in your searches! One last thing I live in the Florida panhandle and was curious if certain regions of the US seem to be better than others, I have got to find some thing to fill all my days since I can not work and would probably consider relocating to a region just to have better luck in doing what I love the most and that is coins.

Thanks for any tips you can share and I wish every one great searching!..Darin

Darin,

You are in the right place to learn everything there is to know. All you have to do is go back and read some of the posts in this thread, and any other thread about denominations you are interested in looking for.

I know how to not find keepers. My last 5 boxes have been skunks, and 2 40%'ers out of the last 9. Customer wrapped rolls are better in my region (Pacific Northwest), but there are not that many available.

I hope you have MUCH better luck than I am experiencing in this endeavor!

I'm so sorry to hear that you were wounded in action. THANK YOU for your service and sacrifice to keep our great United States free. And, if you're a Marine, SEMPER FI!

If you are more interested in looking for silver, there is no question that halves are going to be the most productive because so many folks are unaware that the 1965-1970 mintages are 40% silver, followed by dimes. Silver quarters rarely show up, even in boxes.

About acquiring boxes, you'll just have to call around to whatever banks are in your area, and ask if you open an account with them, will they order boxes for you, and, if so, how many at a time, and at what cost, if any. Your bank may order them for you as well. Personally, I order from one of my banks and return them to a different bank, which I also have an account, and I don't pay for ordering, or pay for wrappers. NEVER, EVER return your searched coins to the same bank that you order from---they WILL NOT appreciate it and may quit ordering for you. Actually, finding a back to dump your returns is probably going to be more difficult than finding a bank to order them.

Here's a list of what to look for in Kennedy error coins:

1971-D - Nice DDO's are found for this year. Some are quite dramatic!
1972 - A very rare DDO exists out there that could provide more financial reward than finding 385 40% silver coins!
1972-D - The No FG (designers initials on the reverse) coin is very difficult to find and commands a very hefty premium in the open market!
1973 - A nice DDR coin can be found.
1973-D - Four DDO's are cataloged for this year/mm with one being very scarce.
1974-D - A very dramatic DDO exists for this year/m
1977-D - Two very scarce DDO's exist for this year/mm.
1980 - This year has a scarce DDO
1984 - This year has a scarce DDO

This is just a partial list, but are the most common to find. And that's not saying it's easy to find them. I have probably searched well over $250,000.00 worth of Kennedys and have only found several of the 1974-D DDOs--about 7 or 8 of them---they seem to be the most common. You'll need a good magnifier or jeweler's loupe (10-30X magnification) to be able to see the errors. And don't confuse mechanical (or strike) doubling with true doubled dies. They can sometimes be hard to tell the difference. Be sure to read this article: http://koinpro.tripod.com/Articles/...Doubling.htm

By the way, you're probably in the best part of the country for finding silver halves. The NE USA seems to be the most searched area, as members here constantly complain about multiple skunk boxes in a row---

Good luck and send me private messages if you want to discuss anything in more detail--
