Well half dollars don't seem to get circulated very well, so they probably have a longer lifespan when it comes to circulated ones...could be a coincidence that you're getting all the same year, or just a bit of luck? :P

I took another drive around town yesterday and stopped at 22 banks. I ended up with just over $500 in halves. I found a 1964, 1966, 1968, 1972 S, 1983 S, and a 1940 from a tellers tray.

chuckster, nice congrats on those 1964s  what an awesome find! today I was able to buy the half dollars from the guys coinstar machine he had 31 dollars worth and found 6 40s and 3 1964's  |

Ok, I have a new box of $500 I picked up before work this morning. I edge searched a few rolls just to see if it was going to be any good. I found an old beat up 1971 that feels light and looks like a coin sandwiched between plates. Almost like the nickel and copper weren't actually melted together. The nickel plating actually seems to extend out slightly further than the interior disk or coin. But the interior has ridges on it as if it were a coin (maybe a quarter) sandwiched between the Kennedy plates. My first thought was some kind of magic coin but I don't think so. Don't have access to a camera right now. Anyone have any ideas without seeing a picture.

Eyeluvcoins, Those 1985s coins you're finding are Proof's. If you're finding a bunch and they're in good shape, you are doing good. Keep them or sell them on ebay for a small profit. Congrats! |

There wasn't anything in Eyeluvcoins's post that would lead me to believe they were proofs, just because the coins are all pretty and shinny doesn't mean they are proofs, I find a lot of AU & BU half dollars in my searching. If it is a proof then it will have a mirror finish and a "S" mint mark.

Unfortunately, the 85s aren't proofs, I checked for the S mint mark as I culled through the first box. I just find it interesting that so many of the 80-89s are in such great condition as compared to the 90s that look like crud. I love my Loupe, it's very handy for times like this  |

Hit up my knockoff coinstar hoping it would have $20 or $30 worth of halves... It had a whopping $3.50. I took them anyways and luckily 5 of the 7 were silver. I got a 64, 65, 66, 67, and a 69. I also bought $30 in pennies a very elderly couple put in right in front of me. Hopefully they have been collecting in that coffee can for about 50 years.

Thanks for the Ike dollars information bbradford and trapper. Congrats to M0nk and Chuckster on such great finds! Got two boxes coming tomorrow, can't wait! Hope to start a silver streak after the last two awesome boxes. My bank story is there's a dude that hangs around behind the teller area and helps me with the coin machine once I fill a bag with my halves and he has to change it. The other day after consulting with his teller-comrades I could hear them say, "Go ask him..." So he comes over to me and shows stuff he has found working at the bank. He had 2 absolutely *MINT* shiny Ben Franklins, and I mean MS high 60's, full bell lines, not a scratch or bag mark on em. Incredible! Had a few other halves, can't remember, but think they were JFK's. Also had 2 silver dimes, a Merc and a Roo. We called my coin dealer on the spot and he thinks they are not key dates so maybe worth only $9, but "I would have to see 'em". Next day, I brought him a dime numis tube and 6 half dollar 2x2's. Hope it encourages him to collect...(and brownie points for me for finding halves from the tellers!)  |

While going through about $7.00 in halves I picked up a various locations, I found a
1969 clad. That was nice, but a little luck was still to come my way.
I picked up five rolls of halves from a local bank late last week. They had all evidently been picked seeing how two rolls were all bicentennials. Well, I went back through and weighed them and one bicentennial weighed 11.5 g.
BINGO, I found a clad in an already picked roll. I guess the other picker did not use a scale.
Not a bad day after all.

How can you tell if bicentennials are silver clad? I've looked and could have sworn they were 40% silver but it didn't have an "S" so I threw it back.

I found a 1971 d and I think it is 40% silver clad (rare error). How much do you think it's worth? I attached a picture of it in the roll of other CU-NI coins and a scan of it up close.   |

This week so far, 3 boxes and a whole of 2 40%. Blech. One more box tomorrow, hopefully that box will be a good one.
