Okay I've spent some time calling around and getting research and questions answered...and for those who don't know...I'm going to summarize this for everyone. If anyone can correct/add please do.


There are a couple different services.

1. CIT - cash in transit - this is the original armored car service. The bank contracts with the carrier to provide 2x daily (usually) pickup/drop off between branches and the banks own vaults (might be leased space at armored carrier's location).

2. Processing - Similar to above except the car service will also process/wrap coins and replace them in the vault space owned by the bank.

The above 2 are traditional methods, a becoming more common service is now known by names such as virtual vaulting and others.

3. Virtual Vault - Car service has an interface where they will be offloaded all coins coming into the branch. If you order coin, the bank places an order with the carrier service who pulls the coin from a common vault and debits the bank's account with cash. Basically the bank will convert all its deposits to virtual currency which can be withdrawn in any denomination. They may swap it for bills and move the larger bills at the end of the day, I don't know for sure.

This can have a couple drawbacks in my mind....say I dump at Brinks in a virtual vault bank....and you pickup from a virtual vault bank also with brinks...you will typically be looking at my leftovers. Even worse, say I pick up at a BOA and dump at a Chase...both using the same virtual vault company...I will be spinning my wheels as some percentage will be my own coins each week.

I've discussed this with a couple of the carrier companies under the guise of getting a weekly delivery to the house (and the wife's place of business).

So going forward we really should develop a database for roll hunting and populate it with good information so we are not tripping over ourselves.

Oh and I found the best dump bank ever...asked how they prefer halves brought in and was told 'if you can carry them, bring them in, makes no difference to us, we seal the bags and carry them 5 feet to the vault and we're done with them.'

Finally got out of the house for a minute today and went to my bank.

Arrived around 4:30 and was told they had my halves but the vault was closed at 4:00 p.m.

So, back I go tomorrow if I can get up enough strength to make the trip. I am still under the
weather and not feeling well. The best I can figure out is some kind of food allergy to some seafood
I ate Tuesday.

$140 in Halves today @ 4 Different Banks = Skunked.
But I did managed to find a kewl looking 1988 $10 Bill without a star though, but I deposited it :(

someone in my area has recently started to dump his coins at my normal dump bank, but he likes to mark all of his. now when I go in they give me the business about the markings thinking I'm the one doing it. ever since he started dumping there I have gotten nothing but full boxes of marked coins, from a different bank altogether. I had to cancel all my orders for a while and try a new bank temporarily.

As for marking coins, I think spray painting them is juvenile.

If someone uses a marker and makes a small mark, then I can understand that. It isn't
something that a bit of acetone cannot take off.

In my case, I have found coins with holes drilled in them in the last four or so boxes. The first one I saw
just left me believing someone may have used it for a necklace at one time. But then, over the next few boxes,
I saw around three more with holes in them (in approximately the same location).

If one marks the edges, okay. If one uses a marker to safely mark the obverse or reverse, okay. But drilling holes
and spray painting coins is just completely out of the question.

Yea, Kenscott, I had one with a hole drilled in this week's box. I also thought it was a one-time thing, until now.
